Sweeney family 1917

Claremorris (Mayo)

I am trying to trace my grandmothers heritage with very little information to go off as she has no birth certificate. I only have bits of information passed down. I am really hoping someone can help me in my search.

My grandmother is Mary Josephine Sweeney born 22nd November 1917 from Claremorris, County Mayo. Her father was John Sweeney born around 1890 and her mother Josephine Sweeney born around 1895. They had 3 children my grandmother, John Sweeney born in 1915? and Kathleen Sweeney. Kathleen passed away in her 20's. They came to England in around 1922 and settled in Cheetham Hill Manchester and my great grandfather John worked on the docks of Manchester ship canal. My grandmother talked about being schooled in a convent with very strict nuns and of living in poverty but her father always made sure she had new shoes! My grandmother lived to reach 98 years old and was much loved by us all. Thank you for your help.

Debbie:

The father was Thomas Sweeney and he married Mary Coppinger in February 1917. See fourth record at the first link. Mary Josephine Sweeney's birth record is the third record at the second link. John and Kathleen were born later than Mary Josephine and since I did not find a record for either child, they were likely born in England. One other possibility is that since civil birth records online are only thru 1923 currently, so possibly they were born 1924 or later in Ireland.

John Sweeney and Winifred Neiland married in April 1st 1884. They both lived in Kilknock townland in Bekan civil parish. Father of John was Patrick. Father of Winifred was Denis.

Wow thank you so much I'm so grateful. My grandmother didn't like to talk about her past as she got too sad. This has answered so many of our questions. Thank you all x

Debbie

From the information provided I have now managed to trace the Sweeney's back to the early 1800's and my 4 X great grandfather! I've unlocked lots about my grandmother's siblings in Manchester she had another 2 sisters that we were previously unaware of. You are right my grandmother looks to have been the first born and the others were born in Manchester. Amazing! I am so grateful thanks again

Debbie
