Taum/Ballyhaunis Area

Bekan (Mayo)

I'm finally heading over to search the graves for my ancestors! I've narrowed my search to Taum and Ballyhaunis but there's a link somewhere near Castlerea. Has anyone a list of graves/churches in the area? I'm going to look through Google Maps etc to plan the journey. Also, any good tips for library or local history groups?

Thanks

Taum is Tuam in Co. Galway. Ballyhaunis is in Co. Mayo and Castlerea is in Co. Roscommon. You need to provide more info on when your ancestors died and where. Also, if they died in the 19th century, it is very likely that a headstone/marker would not exist.

Thank you @marytv and Roger McDonnell for the advice and links.

As with everyone, information is a little sparse. I've searched the village where I was born for graves and found my Great Great Grandfather with Ballyhaunis on the stone. He was a Gleeson, a name not common in that area from my research. The other side is Haddican and I have birth details pre 1850 (when the family start to arrive in England) in Taum. On the 1901 census there are Haddicans around the border of Roscommon and Galway, particularly around Glenmaddy? I think it's a matter of looking on this trip and then arranging a longer trip if I can get more information.

Marriage details are again difficult to trace. Edward Haddican born 1796 is listed as married to a Mary Mayne (The handwriting is difficult to decipher and could be -E-RY) in the Parish Register for Taum with a daughters Bridget born in 1834, Ellen 1844, Mary . She doesn't appear on Census details in England so I'm assuming she died before the family left? The Gleeson link in Ballyhaunis has a Jas Gleeson married to Mary Grogan. There is also a Mary Haddican who arrived in England but without a husband. She changed her name to Mary Shurin born in 1809. Is that a local name to Taum?

The one other interesting item in the area of Taum is that an Ellen Haddican was a Tea and Coffee Agent/Importer/Dealer in 1847 for a company called Brueksop Howe and Company which sounds Dutch?

RootsIreland lists baptisms for four children of Edward and Mary, including Bridget. The other three are:

  • Haddican Edmond 1835 Co. Mayo
  • Haddican Catherine 1841 Co. Mayo
  • Hadican Ellen 1845 Co. Mayo

I hope this is helpful.
