Gleeson and Haddican Family in Bekan/Becan/Began

Bekan (Mayo)

I've posted a few things before but just had some success using Roots Ireland. I've been searching for Gleesons who we've thought had lived in the Ballyhaunis area. We have a gravestone in Derbyshire with a Great x3 uncles name and Ballyhaunis as a place he "came from/born". Our search through Census records has brought up Nenagh and various other areas but I returned to the Bekan search today. We had an idea that my Great x 3 Grandfather married a Mary Delaney. so really pleased to have found this which is a Great x 2 uncle. We have his recoirds from Census details... Father Andrew (sometimes Henry or Henricus) Mother Mary with a birth date of 1838 on Family Search but as they probably didn't know the actual date, this is pretty close.

So if anyone has any knowledge of where else I can look for Bekan information and the link to Derbyshire, it would be a great help. My Great x3 grandfather was a miller so maybe a flour or grain mill around the Bekan Parish?

Casimir,

I looked for other baptisms for this couple, but did not find any. The baptisms for the RC parish of Bekan began in 1832....so, was your X 2 grandfather born prior to that year?

I could not locate their marriage record either, but there is a gap in records between 1829 and 1832 for this parish.

Regards,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn

Thank you so much for the reply. Really appreciate your input. My GGGrandfather was born around 1795 and his wife we think around 1804, so both outside of the baptism records. It’s strange though that Michael in the baptism record is one of six children, with three older siblings but none appear in any records. Just this single baptism. I’ll check to see if they perhaps were baptised when the arrived in England? Do you think that could have been a possibility?

Im so pleased to have found confirmation of the Delaney link. Just wish we could find those snippets of info like where they lived, when they left, and in particular why they chose a small town in Derbyshire. It’s those bits we all do this for!

Thank you again for your help.
