Any descendants for Patrick John McNicholas and Margaret Lavan of Derrynaned, Kilkelley, Co. Mayo?

Aghamore (Mayo)

Patrick John McNicholas (b. 28 February 1864) was my maternal grandmother's uncle. As far as we know, he was the only one of Thomas McNicholas (b. abt 1827) and Julia Nowlan's four children (who survived to adulthood) to stay on the family farm. He appears there, with his family and his father Thomas, in the 1901 and 1911 census records. Patrick's three siblings all emigrated to Chicago. My great-grandfather, Thomas Martin and John J. changed their names to McNichols in the US. Their sister, Bridget "Delia" McNicholas Slattery, kept the family name. The family farm is listed under Julia Nowlan's father Michael in Griffith's Valuation of 1856 as being partly in Caher and partly in Derrynaned. Although the records we've uncovered over the years list Caher, Derrynaned, and Kilkelly, Patrick's brother, Thomas Martin, my great-grandfather, put up a picture of Knock in the family home in Chicago and told his children he was from that parish. I will be in Mayo at the end of this month (September 2025). I do not know if Patrick and Margaret have any descendants still in the area or if they emigrated somewhere else. If any would like more information on what happened with Patrick's relations in Chicago, I would be very happy to meet them and share what I know. Thank you!

Eileen,

My suggestion is for you to complete the Meet & Greet form on this website, and possibly a volunteer in Mayo might be able to assist you with finding any current McNicholas family members near Derrynaned. Otherwise, it might be difficult to track down their five children only knowing where they lived in 1911.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you! I will do that!

Eileen:

I did not locate a good lead for a death record for Patrick McNicholas. Death records are online through 1974 and I did not see a record for a Thomas McNicholas in Caher/Derrynaned so presumably he was still alive until at least 1974.

Thank you, Roger! It is amazing to see the handwritten records. The various names--Derrynaned, Cloonfallagh, and Caher--were confusing to me when I searched for records, so I am glad to see confirmation that I was at least looking in the right place, albeit with different names at times! I am in touch with descendants of John and Bridget (known as Delia) and will happily share this records with them. It was recommended above that I fill out a "meeting" form. I am having some trouble submitting my form but will keep trying! Again, many thanks!

Eileen:

One of our volunteers, Eileen, provided the copies of the civil records. Here is the link to our Meet and Greet form  https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet  Show Aghamore as the civil parish.
