The Hackett family where  from fivemilestown , Tyrone Fermanagh. Thomas Hackett was born 1858-1928   and his wife Ellen Hackett (nee McCaffrey or Droogan ) 1859 -1904 and their five children moved from Fivemilestown to Paisley Scotland . My father John smyth (smith) born 1913 in Essexford Killanny county Louth was in 1921 living with the above family in Paisley . I have no idea why , what the connection was .They could of been family, was it  down to poverty he started a new life in Scotland . Someone has suggested it was common for parents to sell their children , either at local labour fayres or in to local families.   Did they just not send him back home. On my dad's side common irish family names include Smyth , Smith , Corrigan , McKenna , McMahon , Atkinson, Boyle , Breen  , Brennan.

fortyfourpercent,

Do you have your dad's birth record? If not, I found it and can send it to you, but hesitate to post it on a public forum such as this for privacy reasons. If you provide your email address, I'll send a copy of your dad's birth record privately.

Regards,

Dave Boylan
