Baptismal Record transcription for James Kearney

Louth (Louth)

I am wondering if anyone else has come across this in their records.  James Kearney was born 31 Jan 1847.

His baptismal record in Louth parish lists his parents as Patt Kearney and Mary Carroll alias Lennan. Why the alias?

I am wondering which is her maiden name.  Their marriage record of 19 Jan 1845 lists her as Mary Lennan.

They had twins, Thomas and Catherine in Oct 1845 and she is listed the sames as on James's record,

Mary Carroll alias Lennan.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Warm regards,

Hello Connie, I looked at the transcriptions on Roots Ireland and in the notes of the baptsims it says Nee Lennan indicating maiden name, assume the priest of the parish just used alias rather than the more normal Nee, would be interesting to see if the same applies to other baptisms around that time as assume he would be the same priest for some of them.

Her address is the townland of Mullacrew in the parish and I note the townlands for the births are different. the twins are Bailyland and for James is Mullavalley. You can see civil registration area and townlands here

Mullavelly and Bailyland, both to the east of Louth village which is still a very small village.

Interesting site on Louth here https://jbhall.clahs.ie/

Hello Pat,

Thank you for your response.  I saw the transcriptions on Roots Ireland as well.  What confuses me is, if Lennan is her maiden name, why put Carrol in the record at all? There must be some significance to it for it to be included. Was she orphaned and raised by a Carroll family?  The inclusion of the two names to me means something. I just don't know what it is.

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

Connie
