Looking for CALLAN's

The records you saw are likely transcripts of church registers, almost certainly RC*, so would be baptisms, rather than births, but should have been within a day or two of the births. What are the dates for your Patrick jnr. & Catherine ?

Kildemock is the name of the civil parish for Paughanstown, and the RC parish would have been Ardee and based in the town of that name.

Patrick and Mary's marriage would presumably have been before the start of full civil registration in 1864, so a search for church records would be required. Dates available depend on which parish they married in, and parish of baptism of their children is a good place to start.

It seems that Ardee RC parish has marriage and baptism records back earlier than many parishes to the 1760s. Note that early records often include few details, and there are often gaps due to missing faded or damaged pages etc ...

Few RC registers include death/burials although some limited dates (1810 to 1821) seem to be availabale for Ardee parish. If the dates involved are after the start of civil records in 1864 then death certs should be available. There's an index on FamilySearch, and you can order research certs from the GRO for €4

*RootsIreland only seem to have transcripts of RC records for Co. Louth, although they include non-Catholic and civil records in several other counties.

> Do you know if these parish records are available online anywhere?

The only online source I am aware of for the Ardee RC parish, or any of the Co. Louth parishes, are as the transcripts already mentioned on RootsIreland.

I had a quick look at the index on RootsIreland and see Catherine's 1850 baptism in Ardee RC parish, but Patrick's baptism in 1848 is recorded in Dunleer parish to the east of Ardee, so could be a better parish to check for possible marriage.

There two Mary Fitzpatrick marriages showing up on the RootsIreland index in Co. Louth to a groom named Patrick in the years up to Patrick jnr's baptism (1832 to 1848), one in 1833, the other in 1839. Neither are in Dunleer, or Ardee parish. Similarly three Patrick Callan marriages listed in the county during the same timeframe - 1838, 1847, 1848. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a cross match, so it's possible that Patrick snr and Mary married in a parish that doesn't have records for the time they married, or that any records was on a page no faded or missing...

The Tithe records for Poughanstown townland show some interesting results - nearly a third of the 30 or so occupants have surname Callan, so appears your Callan family had some connection to this area back to at least 1829 when this section of the Tithes is dated. See : Tithe Applotment Books,  Poughanstown

Hi Again

I was at a local genealogy lecture today and by Louth County Council and there was an extract of the tenants of Sir Frederick Forster at Mosstown and Philipstown in 1852 giving details of 38 families renting land there. There was one Callan family and the names were Arthur age 37, Alice aged 66, then Mary age 12, Anne age 10, Pat age 8, Thomas age 6 and Alice age 4.

While the family are not yours the Christian names particulary Alice may strike a cord.

The landlords brother Vere Forster had apparently launched a major emigration scheme a few year previously and a pencilled note says one family were going to Australia.

Regards

Pat

The will was processed by Armagh registry so now Northern Ireland, and there's a transcript on PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) website. The transcript is probably all that survives. You can search here

The will mentions a neice Mary Anne Reilly, her brother Patrick.

The GRONI / NIDIRECT system only covers civil records for northern Ireland counties. There's no equivalent system for GRO Roscommon. To search their data you have you find possible matches on the BMD Index, e.g. on FamilySearch, and order research certs. GRO Roscommon holds records for all of Ireland up up to end of 1921, and just counties in the republic after that.

This seems to be the only likely match on the BMD index for Anne's death :

Name : Anne Callan
Event Type : Death
Registration Quarter and Year : Apr-Jun 1885
Registration District : Ardee
Reported Age :38 (est. year of birth Year 1847)
Volume 2 / Page 298

The details I posted are from the BMD Index, you need the cert to see the full information - e.g. place and date of death, cause of death, place of residence etc.  For some notes on the details included see : here

p.s. you mentioned ordering some type of film from FamilySearch - just double check that they have a film of that Register rather than the film of the Index. The films of the Index books will only show the same information as above.
