Mary Jo:

Not sure what documentation you are looking for. The 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Louth shows 87 entries where the surname was Halfpenny.

You can go to www.askaboutireland.ie to search the Griffiths.

What seems to be scarce are death and burial records, also marriages. I'm particularly interested in the Hunterstown area. My mom's ancestors lived in Hunterstown and I have their family from the early 1800's and a living family that another relative says is related, but no connection found so far. I am currently working with the records from Ardee parish and will add Griffiths next.

Most of the "living" branch says their traditional burial place was Ballapousta, and I have some records from there that I got on a visit last year. I would like the listing of burials from St. Marys in Ardee as those are older.

Mary Jo.:

There are a number of civil marriage and death index records in the Ardee registration district. Any names in particular.

Originally, the two families I was trying to connect were:

Patrick Halfpenny and Jane McCullo (my direct line)

William Halfpenny and Mary Mulholland

I know that martin of Pat and Jane went to Canada sometime before 1837 and married there Alice Ward, also from Ireland, Alice died in Ontario, Martin and several of his children ended up in Michigan. Files of the families are too big to attach, but may be seen here:

Patrick and Jane      http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gypsy41&id=I1…

William and Mary    http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gypsy41&id=I1…

Please note that Pat and Jane's fathers may not be correct--chalk it up to my not understanding the marriage record of who might appear on the marriage certificate.

Mary Jo:

I located an 1889 civil marriage index record for a Mary Carberry in the Ardee registration district. One of the possible spouses was a Laurence Halpenny. Don't know if this was a different marriage or not. I did locate an 1933 civil death index record for a William Halpenny. The year of birth appears to be correct. You can get copies of either of these records from the General Register Office for around 4 euros each. If you plan to get a copy, let me know and I will send instructions.

The marriage works, their first (known to me)child was born April 1893, named John, so may not have been the first.

The death record is 10 years off for one of the Williams that I have. I have 18 of them, all Louth, but not all Ardee, will have to see what census might identify him more clearly.

Update: Census

I am attaching a site with information on County Louth and Halpenny names etc, there is graveyard information on it including Dromin. See http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/

Also the name McCullo appears to me to be like McCullogh as they sound the same. Also the names McCulloch and McCullen are in Louth but in Dromin Graveyard there are both Halpenny,s and McCulloghs.

Hope this is of some assistance.

Thanks, the burial records don't contain enough information for me to identify the correct person, however the other records on that site are bery helpful. I had been there before and lost the bookmark.

As to McCullo, I am trying to use the same spelling of the names for the sake of my sanity! When found, I have included the other spellings, too, because I know that often the same name was recorded differently.

Along those lines. COUGHLAN--might this be Conlon or if not, then what might other spellings be?

Hi Mary Jo

in McLysaghts book the Surnames of Ireland Coughlan is given as also Coghlan and were in Offaly (formely Kings County) as MacCoughlan and in Cork as O'Coughlan with the prefixes now almost entirely dropped, that is the Mac and the O. The name is most associated with Cork and the book then refers to Cawlin.

When I look this up is gives Cawlin and Caulin and are recorded as synomyns of Callan in Oriel (that is north Louth) as in your Halpenny area. The name Coughlan is locally pronounced Coholan (almost Cawlan) in Cork and is sometimes so written. Confusion with Cohalan may therefore arise.

That Mary Jo makes it as clear as mud, but totally different names for the same name do occur. The name Callan is associated with the area you are looking, indeed the current mayor of Drogheda is a Callan.

The name is pronounced differently in various parts of Ireland, in my experience Coughlan is Cock Lan and also Cawlin.

Hope you can derive some assistance there.

Thanks! I attempted to learn something of the Irish Language, but the pronunciation was beyond my hearing abilities. I cannot fathom, for instance, how Taoiseach, for instance, can possibly be pronounced something like Tee Shock! Therefore, all help with names and their possible variations much appreciated. (and quay as key??)
