Louisa Margaret Byrne Born 1896 Dundalk, Louth

LouthDundalk (Louth)
I'm an American, and I've recently moved to Ireland.

I hold an Irish passport due to my paternal grandmother, Louisa Margaret Byrne (b. 1896, Dundalk)
She emigrated to America, and died when my dad was only 17.

My father died during Covid, and his mother's premature death was still such a tender subject for him that he didn't end up providing much information about his mother or her life in Ireland before he passed; it was always tough for him to talk about as he adored her.

I would love to visit her family home, and to have more information about her.
I'm here now in large part because of her.

Thank you for anything you might share.

There is some background which you should be aware of. The poster (Stephen) initially wrote to our info email box. Some info was already provided by Kieran Jordan. See below.

Roger

Stephen, Further to what Roger has said, the family were still in Chapel Lane in the 1911 census. See this link: https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Meath/Navan_Urban/Chapel_Lane/726964/ According to that census, Patrick and Catherine were married for 15 years and 6 of the 7 children born alive were still living. At the time of Louisa’s baptism, the family were living in Hill Street, Dundalk, although the baptism took place in Haggardstown. The family moved around a good bit as Louisa was baptised in Louth, 3 children were born in Monaghan and 3 children were born in Meath. You will find further details of births, marriages and deaths at the free website irishgenealogy.ie. For Dundalk, the Civil Registration District is Dundalk, for Navan it is Navan and for the Monaghan one it is Dundalk. As Catherine was from Monaghan, the marriage may have taken place in her home parish. The marriage record should give father’s names and may also give addresses and ages. Street names in Navan have been changed; I’m not sure when this happened, but it seems that Chapel Lane is now part of Railway Street. See this link: http://www.navanhistory.ie/index.php?page=street-map-of-navan-town Navan and District Historical Society (http://www.navanhistory.ie/) have a good website and if you drop them an email somebody may help. I will have a look at your other questions tomorrow and will get back to you. Best wishes, Kieran

Hello Stephen, it ay be difficult to locate the exact house in Hill Street, Dundalk, house numbers on the census are not street numbers but administrative numbers for the census takers and is the number on their list.

The parents are from Monaghan which you have already done, Hill Street is still there on the Dublin side of Dundalk, it may actually be in the parish of Haggardstown as mentioned previously or the baptism took place there as it is just south of Hill Street and may include Hill Street.

Her father had a good job with an insurance company which explains the movement of the family. Because of this it is unlikely there is any neighbours about that would recall them etc

South of Dundalk and Haggardstown has developed extensively in the past 20 years and is a very urban area now.

There are a few Facebook pages dealing with Louth and genealogy or just older photos etc but again unlikely to be much assistance.

I live in Drogheda about 23 or so miles from Hill Street, it is very accessible by bus and train if travelling by public transport and not too far out of the town centre etc

With the information available currently you are not looking for impossible records but maybe the genealogy centre in Dundalk Library and archives might have something to assist. See https://www.louthcoco.ie/en/services/archives/ I think the library is separate to the archives.

Let me know if you have any further queries.

Regards

Pat

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Monaghan/Inishkeen/Drumboat/798591/  Note Bridget Boylan is Patrick Boylan's mother and a widow, his first son is named Peter. I think Bridget Boylan is Louisa's grandmother and Patrick is a brother of Catherine.
