Old killoe Church burial information

Not sure if this helps. I found this description on Find A Grave.

Old Killoe Cemetery is located adjacent to St. Catherine Church, Killoe Glebe, County Longford. The church was erected in 1824 by the Church of Ireland, an autonomous affiliate of the Anglican Communion. There are two burial grounds on the site: a Protestant one to the south of the church, and a Roman Catholic one to the north which has recently undergone improvements.

Thank you Mary, very interesting. I spoke to Martin in the archives department in Longford and he said the graves inside the Church aren't logged in the Killoe booklet, and they are protestant so that explains why we found graves that weren't listed. A lot of my family are in the Catholic side which are in the killoe book but due to weathering are unable to read.

Review the booklet for any historical context or maps that may indicate the division of the cemetery. Sometimes these booklets include valuable notes about different sections.

Hi David,

Sorry for delay in replying. We were looking for the graves of Mary Anne Murphy and her Husband John Murphy and Andrew Murphy and Ellen Murphy, after speaking to a cousin we found out that one of their graves had the wrong headstone put on it, and the stone was removed and propped up against the wall, but never put on the correct grave. There were a few headstones against the wall but none with any writing on. We know most of our family are in that graveyard and we found two family graves, they looked totally unreadable but we managed to wash them down so we could read them, but we were confused as the graves should have been the last 2 near the wall but ended up being 3rd and 4th near the wall. But we were glad we found the two we did. Such a shame that there are so many graves with no headstones or unreadable, but it is an old graveyard on a hill that's battered by wind.

Yes they are my gt gt grandparents. After 15 years of research I know very little about my Heslin side. I know Ellen is related to the Dernacross Heslin's as I read in Father Owen Devaney's Killoe book that her son Thomas Murphy who was a priest is 'a cousin' of Bishop Thomas Heslin of Dernacross but I have been unable to work out if they were first or second cousins or place Ellen or her father Charles in the Dernacross tree. The Dernacross Heslin's Catherine (1823) and Patrick (1802) did have a son Charles but he was born in 1856 and my Ellen was born in 1850 so there was only 6 years between them so I think Ellen's father Charles must have been a brother of Patrick Heslin (1802) but I've had no luck in locating details of Patrick's siblings. Patrick is buried in the old Killoe graveyard mentioned in my original post but sadly we couldn't locate his grave due to weathering.

It would be great if you have any ideas how our trees are linked, it's so annoying knowing you are linked to a branch but being unable to find out how.

Yes I think that Charles and Patrick must have been brothers, I have so far been unable to find Charles death entry. It's such a shame about all the missing records due to the public record office fire.

Hello, Lily. My ancestors were Murtaghs. They lived in Ledwithstown in County Longford. Do you have any connection with those Murtaghs?

Thank you, David. Yes, Michael is definitely my ancestor. I haven’t been able to see how Margaret fits in, though. Michael and his wife Bridget’s children were Patrick, Honor, John, and Andrew. I have been unsuccessful in finding their birth records since they were born in the 1820s and 30s. The Kilcommock records do not go that far back. I have found Michael and Bridget’s death records, though. I hope to visit County Langford one day, but I’m unable to travel now since I provide the home care for my 95-year-old mother. It was her mother who was a Murtagh.

So far, my Murtagh's have been from Cuingareen, Ballinamuck, County Longford. My 3x gt grandparents were Patrick Murtagh b.1815 and Anne Devine b,1827.

Our branch could be connected but I can't recall coming up with anyone from Ledwithstown so far.
