Schools for the Irish youth

Clongesh (Longford)

I was wondering if the Irish youth were educated by public schools or only Catholic ones. If so, would there be records of the students in the 1800's?

My relatives would be McEntire or Butler in Country Longford.

Thank you,

CLONGESH, or CLOONGISH, a parish - Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (1837)

There were also Hedge Schools

I know this isn't the town you were looking at but in the 1920s all the school children of Ireland were asked to write about the area they lived in. This student was from Longford and wrote about Hedge Schools. No longer in existence at that time.
