Merigan & Flynn/Finn Family (County Longford, Cashel Parish) - Seeking Family History
Hi, Im seeking information on my maternal great-great-grandmother, whos name was Margaret Merigan. She emigrated from Ireland to New York in June 1849, when she was very young. Our family is amazed that she traveled alone and arrived in New York in 1849, when she was only 12 (according to the ships passenger list), and she was listed as a servant together with a group of other young women. We believe that she may have been an indentured servant - to pay for her passage on the ship. This age puts her birth in 1837, but her age in documents over the following years place her birth between 1831 - 1837. Study of each different age record seems to indicate she was most likely born between 1831-1833. Family lore is that she was from County Longford, so I'm starting my search here.
I contacted the Longford Heritage Center last August (2018) and they reported a Margaret Merrigan born in 1833 in Loughane, to parents Edward Merrigan and Mary Kennedy, with sponsors James & Mary Flynn, and siblings Michael, b. 1831; Bridig, b. 1837; James b. 1837 (same as Bridig); and more in 1849. Im trying to obtain birth evidence & info that might confirm this is the correct person. Can anyone help me? My thoughts:
- Obtain a birth record for Margaret & any available evidence for her parents (birth, death, marriage, & their famil/parents).
- Confirm there is no evidence for this Margaret in Ireland after 1849, when she left. No marriage, death, or census data for this Margaret.
- Determine if there is any evidence that a member of the Flynn family might have followed her to the USA after 1849. Two months ago, I found Margarets Obituary & Death Certificate (in 1922). Her husband preceded Margaret in death, so these documents were filled out by her daughter, who listed her maiden name as Finn, not Merigan. (Same family name as the baptism sponsors provided by the Longford Heritage Center.) The obituary also says Margaret was survived by a dear brother James Finn. Because both her immigration info (1849 ships passenger list) & marriage certificate (in 1858) show her maiden name as Merigan, we believe that this is her correct maiden name. However, the family was apparently often visited by a dear brother James Finn, and this may have been from her baptismal sponsors family (just like a brother). I would also like to determine if Margarets sponsor family had a child named James who may also have emigrated to America about or after 1849.
Thanks for help anyone can provide!
