Hayes

My great, great grandfather's sister Margaret Ward from Rathwood, Abington, Murroe Parish married 1869 Thomas Hayes from Farnane, Abington but Cappamore Parish. They emigrated to Illinois USA 1884. Thomas had a married sister and cousins already in Illinois. I have a cousin in the US who would be interested in Hayes. Thank you, Tony Ward.

You could for a start check the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) and the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com and here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat also has lots of useful additional information you could look at.

Hi Tony, its possible the Thomas you mention here is tied into our line in some way but it would be distant. There were a few Hayes families in Murroe in the mid 1800s and my Great Grandfather who was John Hayes was born to a John Hayes and Mary Hartnedy from Murroe village in 1847.He had siblings James, Margaret , Bridget , Mary and Catherine but no Thomas but then Thomas could have been a cousin of these and maybe a son of the original John Hayes s brother? There were a lot of Hayes in Murroe at the time and i suppose its likely they were related in some way?

Hi Sinead, the earliest record of my Hayes s that we know of are John Hayes and Mary Hartnedy of Murroe getting married in Boher church in 1833. Both families were from Murroe village apparently. They had children James 1833, Margaret 1836, Bridget 1839, Mary 1844, John 1847 and Catherine 1852.

John 1847 married a local girl called Ellen Fitzgerald who was supposedly a cousin to Thomas Fitzgerald of Bruff who emigrated to the US and put the F in JFK! John and Ellen had 14 children 10 of which lived they were Elizabeth 1873, John 1875, Mary 1877, Michael 1881, James 1884, Lena 1886, Bridget 1889, Denis 1890, Paddy 1892 and finally my grandfather Larry 1895. John and Ellen married in 1872 and primarily lived in Rath Murroe before moving to Cappanouk Murroe in 1894.

Larry Hayes had 10 children John, Lena, Joan, Mary, Paddy, Jimmy, Mick, Catherine, Elizabeth and Larry. My mother is Catherine. I have researched the children of John and Ellen Hayes extensively and have made many contacts in the UK and the US along the way! The only one eluding me is Paddy born in 1892 of which very little is known.

I am looking for Hayes relations from Limerick.  My great-grandfather was James Hayes, son of James and Bridget (nee Nicholson or Nicholas) Hayes.  Research has found that James and Bridget married in the parish of Murroe on 23 February 1841.  Their son William was baptised in that parish on 28 December 1841.  The next three children were baptised in the parish of Doon: Mary (1843), James (1845) and Thomas (1847).  I have no information of where the family lived after this.

Three of the children, Mary, James (my great-grandfather) and Thomas, all came to New Zealand.  Mary arrived in NZ approx. 1863/64 and James and Thomas about 1874/5.  Mary married Philip Duffy in New Zealand in 1866.  Thomas died in NZ in 1878.  James married Mary Flanagan in Dunedin, NZ and the lived & farmed at Tuapeka West, Otago, NZ.  Sadly Mary died some months after the birth of her 5th child.

Any information about the Hayes family that might connect with my great-grandfather's family would be much appreciated.

I have had a look in the records i can confirm  the above that James and Bridget  Nicholson married in Murroe and that their son William was baptised there. 

If the next three children are baptisped in Doon -you could check out the Griffiths valuations for William Hayes in the praish of Doon and that might give you where they lived in 1851- this could be tricky cause there are an many Hayes families in Doon so it could be a bit of a challenge to pin him down.

I had a look for a baptismal record for both James and Bridget . I didnt find any for james in the right year bracket .

I found some possiblilities for Bridget Nicholas/Nichloson

1. Biddy-bap 17 Nov 1815 to Richard  Nicholasand Mary Leonard
2. Bridget bap 03  Apr 1822 to William Nicholas  and Mary Hayes
3. Bridget Bap 15 Apr 1824 to William Nicholas and Biddy Kett ____Note they  had another Biddy born 1820 probably died in infancy. It was very common at the time to keep the names in the family

Yes, thank you - I will post my questions as separate queries as suggested.  I am just new to this site so just am finding my way around.  I am impressed by the quick response to my query anyway!  It has taken years to research to find out about our Hayes family but we have little information about where they lived in Ireland prior to coming to NZ in the 1860s & 1870s.

I was very pleased to receive your quick response to my query.  Yes, I will do some further research as suggested.   The Biddy baptised on 17/11/1815 is (as far as we know) our Biddy - a cousin obtained this information many years ago when v isiting Ireland.  But unfortunately, that is all that we know.  It is not easy researching this family from a distance.  Perhaps I should come to Ireland....!

Aine, hello!  Many thanks again.  I am very impressed with the prompt responses.  I have just discovered from baptismal records here that in fact, William Hayes, the first born of James & Biddy Hayes, probably came to NZ as well - as there is a William Hayes recorded as a godparent for one of the children of my great-grandparents here.  So more research required for me here too.  I have only ever known of three of the Hayes family migrating.

I found 2 possible sisters to Bridget 

Mary b 25 Mar 1819 , Address Glenstal 

Mgt b 22 July 1821 ,

Although there seems to be a bit of confusion over the fathers name as it Rodget and Rodger , but in doing my own family history i have come across many of these kinds of mistakes in the records,these could be errors in transcription or also in the original records- though it would hard to prove 100% that these are her sister ,  but I would say it is likely !

I looked in the Tithe applotment 1826 and there is a Nicholson no first name  living in glenstal ,you would have to look at the original to see if you could make out the first name .It is highly possible your Nichlosons came from Glenstal!

There is also 1826 - William living Rath wood and Stephen  and George Living in Rath

Thank you for your help. I had Bridget's father listed as Richard Nicholson but perhaps this is incorrect?

I am wondering if Bridget Hayes (nee Nicholson) died sometime after the birth of Thomas who was birth in 1847 as I have discovered this week that there is also a Catherine Hayes who may be a half-sister of my Hayes family.  Her father was James Hayes and Nora Connor (I think) and Catherine was born at Portnard, Co Limerick.  I have yet to do more research about this Catherine Hayes but she was probably born c1856.  She was married in Lawrence, New Zealand in 1880. Do I need to post this information on another Parish site?

Bridget father is recorded as Richard Nicholson , but it that the other 2 girls born are her sisters and that there was a mistake when transcribing from the original or that it was written down wrong in the first place. I have come across many of these mistae but as i said it would be hard enough to prove that they are related.

It is possible that she died and James remarried  and had more children.Portnard would be in the parish of Cappamore it is  adjacent to the parish of Murroe , so it would be worth putting a message on their parish board !

Hi, would anyone out there know the origins of Hugh Maguire of Murroe who had the Forge in Murroe around the Griffiths Valuation time and also house and land rented in Abington around the same time (1840s). Looking for relatives of Eliza Maguire Murroe circa 1820 married Michael Fitzgerald from Rath. It s looking like Hugh is brother or father but cannot confirm yet, any help appreciated.

Hi Aine, Do you think you could find any more children born to Michael Fitzgerald and Eliza McGuire married 1851 in Murroe? It appears our Ellen Fitzgerald was the first child born to them? I have a feeling there may be a Michael, James and maybe Catherine?

My grandmother was Mary Hartnedy of Murroe,baptised 27.08.1850, the daughter of Michael HARTNEDY & Mary nee HICKEY, who married 21.02.1846.I believe that Michael Hartnedy, my great grandfather, was baptised 25.03.1822, the son of John HARTNEDY & Margaret HAYES in Murroe. I think we are almost cetainly researching the same families, which would be delightful!

Hello, I wonder if you could shed any light on my family. My father, Thomas Hayes, was born on Sandy Lane, Boher and baptised in the Holy Rosary, Murroe. His father was Kennedy Hayes and I think Kennedy's father was John Hayes, also from Murroe/Boher. My father had 9 siblings, most of them emigrated to Birmingham, UK where I was born. I know my dad was a keen hurler, but otherwise I know very little about his family history. Many thanks
