Hartnett/Hartnedy Murroe, Co. Limerick
I hope you’re all well. I’ve been researching my family history from Murroe, Co. Limerick, and would be extremely grateful for any input on whether my research is leading to the correct ancestral records.
My great grandfather was Lawrence Hartnett, born 13th December 1901, in Glenstal, Murroe (Co. Limerick). Lawrence was one of 9 children born to John Hartnett and Margaret Hartnett (formerly Margaret Tucker, my 2x great grandparents).
John Hartnett (my 2x great grandfather) is where I’ve hit a brick wall unfortunately. John Hartnett married Margaret Tucker (2x great grandparents) on the 22nd February 1887 in Murroe.
Listed on their marriage record is Johns father (John Hartnett (my 3x great grandfather) as being; Alive, Shoemaker).
I’m led to believe from my research, that John might have been known as John Hartnedy when he was born and reverted to Hartnett later on, there’s a baptism record for a John Hartnedy from July 1859 in Murroe, which coincides with Johns age listed on his death record in 1935.
The baptism record from 1859 lists Johns parents as “John Hartnedy (my potential 3x great grandfather), and Joanna/Johanna Cummins (my potential 3x great grandmother).
John Hartnett (2x great grandfather) and Margaret Tucker/Hartnett (2x great grandmother), named their first two children “John” and “Johanna” (named after the children’s grandparents, I believe this was common in Ireland in the 19th century), I also have a death record for Johanna Hartnett (3x great grandmother, Murroe, Co. Limerick) from the 24th October 1890, the record lists Johanna as a “Shoemakers widow”, John (3x great grandfather) was listed as a shoemaker on John Hartnetts (2x great grandfather) marriage record.
I also have a death record for a “John Hartnedy” (potential x3 great grandfather) who died on the 28th March 1889 (Murroe, Co. Limerick), the only doubt I have is that this record lists John as a “Labourer” and not a “Shoemaker”.
My research points towards John and Joanna (my 3x great grandparents) as having 2 children (John Hartnedy (2x great grandfather), Baptism July 1859 and Lawrence Hartnedy, Baptism Jun 1861), I have records for 2 other potential children (Mary Hartnedy, Mar 1855 (mother is listed as Judith Cummins instead of Joanna Cummins), Michael Hartnedy Jan 1857 (mother is also listed as Judith Cummins), again I appreciate that baptism records aren’t the most accurate at this time, and that maybe “Judith/Joanna” might have been used interchangeably.
Records suggest that John Hartnedy married Joanna Cummins (3x great grandparents) on the 21st Jan 1854 (Witnesses; John Hartnedy (potential x4 great grandfather), Margaret Rainsford, Mary Maguire), in Murroe.
I would be grateful for any input from anyone who can confirm whether I’m following the correct people, and anyone who may be able to shed some light on the Hartnett/Hartnedys from Murroe, Co. Limerick. I appreciate this post is quite long, and might be a little confusing, I’m extremely grateful for your time and any help that anyone can provide.
