Town Name

Limerick

I have an ancestor, by marriage, Bridget CARROLL, who arrived in Sydney, Australia in Feb 1848 on board the "Hyderabad".  She gives her native place as "Cunachair, Limerick".  I can't find this name anywhere and it could, of course, be a total misspelling by the personal writing the passenger list.  Can anyone help?

This a longshot but there is a townland called Cloonygarra in Dromin civil parish. I checked the Griffths Valuation head of household data for Dromin parish from 1850 and there were Carrolls listed in the parish including three in Cloonygarra. See list below. There are other townlands in Limerick which come close to your phonetic spelling. Use this link

http://www.seanruad.com/   Go the search page and check Limerick and in the townland field show c and then check "begiinning of field" on the right and you should get all townlands in Limerick which start with a C. You can then do your own review. Let me know if you have more questions.

I pulled the ship manifest record up on Ancestry.com (to look at the handwriting) for that location of Cunachair, Limerick (no help there as it does indeed look exactly like that spelling) but I noticed when I pulled the record up that in the index portion it says:

New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896

Name:  Bridget Carroll

Birth Year:  abt 1830

Age:  18

Gender:  Female

Arrival Date:  19 Feb 1848

Vessel Name:  Hyderabad

Origin Location:  Ballintagart*, County Armagh, Ireland

*IreAtlas (http://www.seanruad.com/) database spells it Ballintaggart, County Armagh in the Civil Parish of Kilmore.   Do you have any idea WHY the 'Origin Location' is listed as Ballintaggart Co Armagh?  Kathy

Yes Kathy, I noticed that as well, but the previous entry (previous page) is for a Catherine CARROLL, 22, (a sister, I presume) and her location also says Cunachair (the index portion says that as well).  I just assumed it was some sort of transcription error on the part of Ancestry with Bridget's entry.  More investigation is necessary meethinks!!!  Cheers, Denise.
