John Collins, wife Mary Ann Cleary, Co. Limerick Ireland

Limerick

John Collins B @ 1845, Co. Limerick married Mary Ann Cleary B@ 1845 Co. Limerick

had children Mary B@ 1864 Co. Limerick,  Ellen B. Oct. 1867 Co. Limerick, Nancy Collins B. 24 Jul 1873 Co. Limerick, Michael 4 April 1881 Co. Limerick.

All of the children emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, USA and died there (except Patrick who died in Manteno, Kankakee, Illinois). The children emigrated at different times.  Only Nancy married - in 1894 - so by then all had emigrated.

Wondering if anyone has access to marriage record or other records for John and Mary Ann, and birth or baptismal records for any of the children.

Interested in where exactly they were from in Co. Limerick.

Birth dates are from death certificate with that information provided by family so I'm hoping they are accurate.

Anything helping to locating the Parish or Townland would be greatly appreciated.

Will be glad to reciprocate with record search in and around Chicago, Illinois or Illinois.

A John and Maria were married Nov. 25, 1854, in Dromin and Athlacca. They had 13 children and lived in Ballinamona, Bruff, Dromin and Athlacca.

Dromin, Limerick - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

I found a Mary born April 14, 1857, and a Michael Joseph born Dec. 12, 1876, and baptized Dec. 13, 1876. I did not find an Ellen or Nancy. If you think this is the right family I will provide the other children's birth info.

Regards- Mary

Anne,

Since your John and Mary Ann were born around 1845, an 1854 marriage doesn't work. I just noticed you mentioned a Patrick. The couple above had a son Patrick born April 4, 1878, and baptized Apil 5 1878.

Another resource for you to use for birth, marriage and death records. It's free.

Thank you Mary for your help.

According to the family, there were only 5 children. All emigrated as far as we know.

I am rechecking my info and Michael J. was Born 26 Dec 1879

It was son Patrick who was born 4 Apr 1881.

I don't know if John (death certificate sent) is the correct one.

Not sure about Mary Ann either as it doesn't show her maiden name.

Daughter Mary probably emigrated around 1882 - 1884 as a family letter from Nancy & John O'Donnell's daughter - in -law , she came first with her sewing machine. Not found in the 1900 census but younger sister (who came later) was a dressmaker. Michael's emigration shows 1896.

Appreciate your help.

Anne,

In my research on RootsIreland I did not find another family with John Collins and Mary Anne Cleary. Assuming they were Catholic maybe the parish they belonged to hadn't started reporting. If they were Protestant, many of their records were destroyed in a fire. Ireland did not start civil birth registration until 1864, which you should be able to find on the Irishgenealogy site I identified in a previous message. I did not find any of the children that you identified on the site, but you might have better luck, Perhaps John and Mary Ann did not register them. There was a requirement to register within 3 months of birth.

Death records are not always an accurate source for birthdays. They did not celebrate birthdays in Ireland and often an individual did not know the day and sometimes the year. Some individuals when they came to America wanted to be older or younger and would change their birth year. Researching my own family who all came from Ireland I have found there were sometimes a 5+ year difference in age versus there actual baptism or civil registration date. Also, I have found on various documents different birth date info was included. Often the relative/ friend registering a death made their best guess.

In case you decide to pursue the family I identified, here is a record for Michael from Ancestry. Was his middle name John or Joseph?

Could Mary have returned to Ireland and gotten married? I think this is your family? Note the niece and nephew were both born in Ireland. Katie was a seamstress.

I couldn't find Katie's but this is probably Michael's baptism record. Simon and Mary had at least 9 children per RootsIreland. Collins sponsors were Johanna, Elizabeth, John, Nano, Honoria, Deborah, and Ellen.

The Mary Cleary and John Collins I identified earlier children were Michael, Maria, Kate, Helen (Ellen), Elizabeth, Johanna, Hanora, John Francis, Deborah, Richard, Michael Joseph, and Patrick.

Hello Mary,

I found these two death records - for Nancy and Patrick.  Nancy's information was provided by her niece, Helen, and Patrick's information was most likely proved by Patrick when he checked in to the hospital so I feel those are accurate.

In 1900 Michael, Patrick and Ellen (Nellie) were living with Nancy and her husband, John O'Donnell and their daughter Helen.

The 1910 census is the same as you found with Ellen, Michael J., Patrick C. Collins and Katie C. and Michael J. Browne.

In 1920 just Michael and Ellen Collins were together at 4719 St. Lawrence Ave., Chicago, Cook, Illinois

He is shown as a shipping clerk, she has no occupation shown.  Both show immigration as 1880 which can't be correct unless it's 1888 which is still early as Michael would have only been 11 years old.

1930 census shows Michael's immigration year is 1895  and Patrick's immigration year shows 1900 which seems too early - Patrick would only have been 9.

Still digging.

Looks like you are correct about Mary going home.

Will look for the Browne family here.

Thank you,

Anne

Sorry. Helen was Nancy Collins’ daughter, not niece, so

Nannie’s birth date should be good

i did find a Michael born 1879 but I think another researcher found the Dec 26, 1879 date and just took that as correct. He made other errors regarding the O’Donnell family as well so a different date is plausible.

Anne,

As I mentioned before the only birth dates I accept are the actual baptism or civil birth registry.

Michael's WWI Draft Registry. I think his middle name is Joseph. Patrick's enlistment above is from same address.

This Michael is probably correct.  The other researcher used the 26 Dec 1879 I found and he lived in Connecticut.  Apparently he just found the right name but didn't look at the record! .

The birth dates for John Collins and Mary Ann Cleary were just estimates based upon the estimated birth of Mary in October. 1867.  Their marriage date of 1854 is totally possible.    Mary's birth date could be wrong and since I used 1867 - I just go back 20 years to guess at birth dates for the parents.  I had no idea there were more children.

This is my partner's family (he's an O'Donnell) so I just used what his mother knew and gave me and she was an in-law.  His dad didn't know a whole lot more.  I do know all said Patrick Collins went to Trinity College so I doubt he came after he was at least 17, 18, 19?  Patrick apparently worked intermittently since he thought most jobs were beneath him since he had gone to university!  LOL.

My partner's sister is going to visit Limerick in a few weeks so the best place to go would be around Ballinamona, Bruff, Dromin and Athlacca?

I will send her the links you kindly provided.

Thank you again,

Anne
