John Allen - Limerick / Tipperary

Limerick

Also looking for info on my great grandfather - John Allen b. about 1857 in Limerick (possibly Tipperary), emigrated to USA (Chicago) in about 1880, where he married my great grandmother Annie Mullowney / Maloney) in Chicago in 1890.

I have veery little to go on as regards John. Despite my efforts, I have not been able to surface info as regards his parents or any siblings. So, I know this is a long shot....

I will be in the Limerick / Tipperary area October 16-18.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi Mike!

I took a look at your tree on Ancestry and saw the oldest son of John Allen and Anne Mullowney was named David Michael. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a John Allen baptismal record with father David in Co. Limerick or Co. Tipperary. Also, no John Allen record in Co. Limerick with father Michael from 1855-1860.

Have you considered a general DNA test?  Possibly you will have matches with third or fourth cousins on the Allen line who may have more information on the origins of the family.

Hi roger --

Thank you for replying and taking a look.

Yes, David Michael was my grandfather (born in Chicago). I too looked for possible parents of John named Johnm, David or Michael, but nothing definitive.

I haver take the Ancestry DNA test but have not really found anyone that appears to be from the Allen lineage....(but, I am still new at this).

I really wish I had asked my Dad and Mom when they were alive about all of this!

My best hope, I now feel, is to see if I can find some living relatives of John's wife (Annie Mulowney / Maloney from Sligo) and see if they can shed any light.

Thaks again!

Hi Roger -

Still working on the John Allen connection (my great grandfather, born about 1857 in Limerick... died in 1902 in Chicago after emigrating Circa 1880. )

I think you could access this link? Vertical Tree View - Ancestry

I have now found three DNA matches to Anne McNamara (b. 1754 in Limerick), she would be my 4th great-grandmother (I think).

I think the path travels though her son "John" (born 1782 in Limerick) or, her son Simon, born in Limerick in 1778.

I really don't have a full grasp on Ancestry.com and how to search the DNA matches and paths. Would you help? My head is about to explode!

As a reminder, my goal is to work backwards from my Great Grandfather   "John" (born 1857 in Limerick) to try and learn about his parents, grandparents, siblings etc. I will be visiting Limerick in October.

Thanking you in advance for any help

Mike

Mike:

My only suggestion if for you to contact the other distant matches to see what documentation they have to show they descend from Michael Allen to John Allen to Anne McNamara.
