Information Patrick Ryan Abington Limerick
Limerick
Patrick R. Ryan, a tailor from Abington Parish, County Limerick, his wife Margaret Bourke Ryan and their five children, the oldest twelve and the youngest an infant, emigrated from Ireland in 1846. Margaret’s two sisters, Ann and Mary, traveled with them. The voyage to America was long and difficult.. Consequently Patrick landed in Quebec instead of his intended destination, Boston, and, according to Molly Ryan, his granddaughter, the family was quarantined for some time at Gross Isle before being loaded onto a steamboat and taken to Montreal. “Then they set out for Boston by train,” Molly continues, “but on the way Grandfather met a man who told him of the land of great promise that was being opened up—a railroad just being put through.
