McGrath of Elton

Knockainey (Limerick)Bulgaden (Limerick)

Hello All,

I'm hoping there is someone here who is familiar with the families of Elton, Co. Limerick.  I'm trying to find information about McGraths in Elton that might connect to my great-great-grandmother Mary Leahy (née McGrath).

Estimating her birth from her death record Mary McGrath was born in about 1823.  I am assuming for now that she was born in the parish of Knockainey as she married my great-great-grandfather Patrick Leahy, of Balline, Martinstown (Emlygrennan), on 6th February 1853, in Knockainey.  Her place of residence is given as Elton and the witnesses appear to be Thomas and Daniel McGrath.

This is the only real information I have regarding her but other McGraths appear as sponsors for Mary and Patrick's children;

  • John bapt. 24 Jun 1856 - Sps Michael McGrath & Mary Leahy
  • Bridget bapt. 22 May 1858 - Sps John Leahy & Bridget McGrath
  • Roger bapt. 3 Dec 1859 - Sps James Walsh & Bridget McGrath
  • Michael (my great-grandfather) bapt. 14 Jun 1861 - Sps Thomas Leahy & Ellen McGrath
  • Patrick bapt. 11 Apr 1964 - Sps Jeremiah McGrath & Catherine alias McGrath

They were all baptised in Bulgaden Parish.

I found another curious connection to McGraths of Elton in an article in the Limerick Leader from 6 Jan 1930 which provides an outline of a dispute over the dispensing of money towards the upkeep of an Edmond McGrath at Limerick Mental Hospital.  Edmond's father, also Edmond, of Elton, had died on 19 Mar 1925 and had left a sum of money for the maintenance of his son.  There was however an anonymous application made against the trustees appointed following Edmond Snr's death.  It appears that my great-grandfather, Mr Michael Leahy of Martinstown, made a statement in response as it had been suggested that he 'was not discharging his duty'.  Edmond Jnr appears to have become a ward of chancery as the sum of money had been seized by the court.  The other two trustees named were a Mr Thomas T. Leahy of Tiermore, and a Mrs M. Heelan.  I understand that the Leahys of Tiermore are also connected to my Leahys but I have yet to ascertain how and with a bit of further research I believe I can identify Mrs Heelan as Margaret McGrath, daughter of the Edmond Snr mentioned above, who married a John Heelan of Elton in 1898.  This suggests that the younger Edmond was a brother of Mrs Heelan and perhaps a cousin of my great-grandfather but this second point is difficult to determine.

I did a bit more digging regarding Edmond Snr and can see that he married Alice Walsh of Elton in 1868 in Knocklong Church and the marriage record shows that his father was Pat McGrath.  I can see from Griffith's Valuation that there was a Pat McGrath holding land in Elton, in two parcels leased from Mrs Mary Jane Grady.  This Pat McGrath appears to have married a Bridget Heelan (this surname appears to crop up a lot) in 1820 in Knockainey Parish.  From what I can find in the baptismal records they at least 7 children;

  • Anne bapt. 30 Jun 1821 - Sps William Grady & Catherine Grady
  • Mary bapt. 28 Oct 1822 - Sps Henry Grady & Mary McGrath by proxy for Anne ?
  • Eliza bapt. 28 Oct 1824 - Sps Dennis Fitzgerald & Joanna Burk
  • Edmond bapt. 25 Jan 1826 - Sps Michael Power & Nell English
  • Catherine bapt. 23 Oct 1842 - Sps John Ryan & Anne Geary
  • Ellen bapt. 10 Nov 1844 - Sps William Hogan & Anne Heelan
  • Joanna bapt. 11 Sep 1846 - Sps William Power & Anne Heelan

The Mary McGrath here fits with the age of the Mary in my tree and there is also an Edmond but there appears to be 10 years' difference between his potential birth and the age he gave in the 1901 and 1911 census (65 and 75) suggesting a birth year of 1836, and the age given at death was 92 which suggests a birth estimate of 1833.  There is however a very large gap in the baptisms I found for Patrick McGrath and Bridget Heelan as baptisms seem to stop in 1826 and pick up again in 1842 so there may very well have been another Edmond born in this period.  I also had a look to see if there was another Patrick and Bridget but this seems to be the same couple having children over a period of about 26 years!  I did however use FindMyPast to assist with searching for baptismal records so I think I'll have to manually go through these intervening years on the NLI online images.

I found a fairly distant DNA match to a man who's descended from an Anne McGrath of Elton but her father was Michael from what he can determine, and he shares a match with a descendant of my great-grandaunt Bridget Purcell (née Leahy) who was my Mary McGrath's daughter so there are clearly some further connections to be found.

It would be wonderful if there were any members on here who are perhaps connected to the area or are familiar with any of the families as Heelans seem to appear a lot.  I also found it curious that some of Pat and Bridget McGrath's children had Gradys as sponsors when they were leasing the land from Gradys too!

Anyway, I think that's enough information to be going on.  I'll also attach the article from the Limerick Leader.

Thanks

Pat:

The subscription site Roots Ireland has the missing baptismal records. I located 13 baptismal records for children of Patrick McGrath and Bridget Heelan: Some names are listed twice which means that children died young and the name was used a second time: Anne 1821 Mary 1822 Eliz 1824 Edmond 1826 Eliz 1827 Darby 1828 Johanna 1835 Darby 1836 Michael 1838 Philip 1840 Catherine 1842 Ellen 1844 Johanna 1846.

There is a gap between 1828 and 1835 so you should screen the parish register to see if you can identify any additional records. There is also the slight possibility that there were two Patrick McGrath/Bridget Heelan couples in the parish.

Roger,

Thanks for the additional details.  I also just did a search with the same criteria in FamilySearch, and the other children do appear as well.  But, as you said, I think I'll need to manually look through the NLI images to see if I'm missing anything.  I was a bit cautious about the gap in baptisms but I can't seem to find another Pat McGrath and Bridget Heelan, although they still may crop up.

I see Pat McGrath is also in the tithe applotment books but he appears to have more acreage than in Griffith's Valuation.  He has 40 acres here and it drops to 34 in Griffith's.
