Martin Cronin & Ellen Lahiff

LimerickKilquane (Limerick)

Hello,

We will be visiting Limerick on 16th April, and are searching for any information regarding the above Martin Cronin and Ellen Lahiff, who are my GGG Grandparents.

Martin Cronin was born in St. Patricks in Limerick in 1828 . His parents were John and Hannah. Martin married Ellen Lahiff on 28th July 1851 at St. Johns in Limerick. Ellen Lahiff's parents were Michael Lahiff born 1805 and Bridget McNamara. Theythen migrated to Australia, where they had 5 children and lived at Waterloo, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

This is all the information I have and would dearly like to find out more.

Hi Pat,

As you may be aware, the rootsireland marriage record of Michael Lahiff & Bridget has very little info except the name of the parish & denomination:

Date of Marriage:29-Nov-1823
Parish / District:ST. PATRICK'S
County:Co. Limerick
Husband
WifeName:MichaelLahiff

Roman Catholic

There are no birth / baptism records for Lahiff in Limerick before 1825 on roots I'm afraid; no luck with the Cronin marriage

Hi Col,

Thank you so very much for that information.  Is there an address for the Limerick Workhouse, or has it been dismantled and turned into something else?  Is that other address No 2 Colloney Street, Limerick where Michael had lived or is that the Workhouse?

Thank you once again, for your prompt help.  We are coming to Ireland at Easter this year, and hope to be able to find this place.

Kindest regards,

Patricia Quinn

Hi Col,

Do your records show the birth dates or any other information which would be able to tie this Michael Lahiff into my family tree, as in his children or wife?

Thank you.

Hi Pat,

You've been nusy on the genealogy! I had a look for some of your other ancestors but didn't have any luck so didn't respond.

I tried google earth for Connolly Street Limerick but there was only a Connolly Avenue; (no 2 in the record was Parish District no). When I searche for Workhouse nothing came up.

I'm not a Limerick expert but my son-in-law is a Limerick lad so I'll email him.

Not long till your trip!

Update Pat.

My son-in-law & his dad discussed the workhouse question.

There was a Colooney St which became Wolf Tone Street; there is now a barracks there so maybe...?

Also 'A new Limerick Workhouse was built in 1839-41 on an 11 acre site on the east side of Shellbourne Road across the Shannon to the north-west of the city'. Would he have been in this one in 1891?

There would be people around who would know where the workhouse was but it's hard to know where to find them.

Hi Col,

Thank you very much for all your research.  At least we will have a little bit of an idea of where to look when we get to Limerick!!!

I really appreciate this.

Kind regards,

Hi Col,

Have just found an entry on the ship's manifest saying that Michael Lahiff was still alive in 1854, living in St. Patricks, Limerick and that his wife, Bridget McNamara had already died.  Does this lead us in any other direction?

Many thanks,

Patricia Quinn

Sorry Col, I mistyped in the death date of  Michael Lahiff in my records as 1851 when it was 1891, which makes it really a perfect match, so I think that this may be him.   Thank you once again for all your efforts and suggestions.
