This could be a surprise for you if  the contact is accurate.  My Great great grandfather was Patrick Leahy born in Limerick in 1807.  He was married with a family??? He got into some serious trouble and was transported to Sydney N.S.W. Australia on the convict ship "Earl Grey" after being on the hulk "Surprise" in 1836.Ref. Irish Transportation Records  He married again a convict lady and produced another family.  This was encouraged by the N.S.W. Governor.  Her name was Bridget Dwyer. They had a pub in Sussex Street Sydney which is close to the harbour, but in those days quite rough,  The area now is very up market, Have not done a DNA test yet, but now might be the time.

You match my husband John E "Jack" O'Neill at 7.5 generations to Most Recent Common Ancestor, but unfortunately my research has only taken me back five generations. Jack's grandmother was Mary Leahy O'Neill Ryan of Kilmallock. She immigrated to Boston and married there, but her Leahys were from Kilmallock and the surrounding townlands (Martinstown, Knocksouna, etc.).

Firstly Dawn, I thought I had replied to you already - huge apologies, I was certainly not ignoring your post! I wonder what the "serious trouble" was! Another Leahy I have a DNA link to (this time from a separate side of my family but also happens to be "Leahy", but from County Kilkenny) had the misfortune of having 2 husbands die and she and her young children were convicted of stealing a sheep and they were sent to Australia. So sad. Luckily for you, she survived, married again and her descendants are still Down Under! Without a DNA test it is hard to see if there is a real connection, so please do get back in contact if you ever do one! Also, there is a Leahy FB page if you are interested.

I am currently speaking to 2 Mary Leahys - both hailing from Kilmallock area (I think neither live there now though) and I am related to one of them (awaiting DNA result for the second Mary). Religion: Roman Catholic, Married: In Ireland, Family: 1 Male child, Trade: Farm Labourer, Offence: Murder Thomas KENNEDY, Tried 15th July 1836 - Life, Convict was convicted with James and John BURNS, Height 5'6", Complexion Dark Sallow Eyes Grey Description: Lost a front upper tooth, four blue dots back of right hand, two back of left, raised mole back of left side of neck. Ticket of Leave, Conditional Pardon. I have a death date which seems inacccurate 21st September, 1903??  He was also held on the hulk "Surprise" before being transported.  Hope you find this interesting.

May I ask a perhaps stupid question regarding the surname Leahy?

Would (O')Leary be another form of Leahy or how would they be related?

Hi Lizanne, I am not an expert, so please do your own research, but I know from havingn joined the Leahy FB page that there are indeed many varients of the name Leahy, like Lahey, Lahy, Leahey, O'Leahy, but the name Leary or O'Leary is a different name altogether. O Leary comes from the Irish Ó Laoghaire or Ó Laoire. To quote Ancestry: "Americanized form of Ó Laoghaire ‘descendant of Laoghaire’, a byname originally meaning ‘keeper of the calves’, from laogh ‘calf’. This was the name of a 5th-century king of Ireland."  Leahy on the other hand: "reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Laochdha ‘descendant of Laochdha’, a personal name derived from laoch ‘hero’." They are both Munster names though, so common in Co Cork. 

Hope tha thelps to establish that Leahy and O Leary are separate surnames.

Hi Jackie,

A bit late for your Dad's 80th but never too late with genealogy! 

Patrick Leahy ((1805-1870) was my Great Great Grandfather. He married Ellen McCarthy (1804 - 1885) on 13th Feb 1825 in Bulgaden parish. I believe Patrick Leahy's Dad (my Great Great Great Grandfather was Roger Leahy Born 1790 but I am stuck here with no further info. 

Patrick & Ellen had 9 children, the youngest Daniel (1851-1908) was my Great Grandfather. One of the 9 children was John Leahy born 1830. I do not have further information on him at this point.
