Tithe Applotments for Doon

Doon (Limerick)

I have found who I believe is my Great Grand Father Patrick Sullivan baptized in Pallasgreen in 1828. Patrick is one of several children born to Patrick's parents, John Sullivan and Mary Bourke.

The parish records do not show the place of birth for Patrick. Only his parents and Godparents. To find where John Sullivan might be living at that time I looked at the Tithe Applotments for the Civil Parish of Doon. A John Sullivan is listed to be living in the Townland of Coonagh in the Civil Parish of Doon. It turns out that the surnames of the Godparents for all John Sullivan and Mary Bourke children are also living in that same Townland, Coonagh. That's the good news.

The bad news that Townland Coonagh does not appear to exist except in the Tithe Applotments of Doon. Coonagh is the name of the Barony that Doon is part. This is driving me nuts because I feel I am so close to finding the birth place of my GFF, Patrick S. I can see a Coonagh Castle in the vicinity and probably part of the Doon Civil Parish. I was wondering if there are any experts out there that can be more definitive about where this Coonagh Townland might exist.

Thank you....Sean Sullivan

From GoogIe AI:

Coonagh is a townland and former industrial area located on the north bank of the River Shannon, just west of Limerick City. Historically significant for brick-making, farming, and salmon fishing, this riverside area is bordered by the Crompaun River, Clonmacken Creek, and the Shannon. It is now a key area in the expansion of Limerick city.

Key Details About Coonagh, Limerick

  • Location: Situated in the parish of St. Munchin's, adjacent to Meelick (Co. Clare) to the west and Caherdavin to the east, along the Shannon River.
  • Historical Industry: Known for "Coonagh brick," which was used to build Georgian-era red brick buildings in Limerick City, such as those on Patrick Street and Arthur's Quay, during the late 18th century.
  • Traditional Lifestyle: Residents historically operated as fishermen (using traditional gandelow boats), reed cutters for thatch, and farmers.
  • Geography: The area is characterized by low-lying, tidal lands near the Shannon River.
  • Modern Development: Coonagh has become a strategic location for infrastructure, including the N18/N7 road network in the Limerick metropolitan area.

Note: There is also a "Barony of Coonagh" in east County Limerick, which is a separate administrative division.

Patricia,

Thank you for your reply.

The Townland named Coonagh was listed under the Civil Parish of Doon on the Tithe Applotment online access.

Sean,

Again from GoogIe AI:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823–1837) record the townland of Coonagh under the civil parish of Doon because they were organized based on the established Church of Ireland parish boundaries, not Roman Catholic or modern administrative divisions. These, which can be viewed at The National Archives of Ireland, often grouped areas differently than later records.

It Iooks Iike Coonagh, whiIe considered part of the parish of Doon in the tithe records, was Iater made part of KiIIeeIy civiI parish.

I hope this is heIpfuI.

Patricia,

My knowledge of the geography of Ireland and the different ways these applotments were organized is beyond me. It is my understanding that the Civil Parishes pretty much followed the Church of Ireland Parishes but are you saying that is not the case? Coonagh listed in the Parish of Doon in the Tithe Applotments ending up in the Killeely Civil Parish at a later date is even more beyond me!

I am going to give up on this. All I know that Patrick Sullivan's daughter was born in the Catholic Parish of Cappamore which adjoins the Catholic Parish of Doon. The best candidate for Patrick was baptised in 1828 in the Pallasgreen. At that time there was no Church in Cappamore and Pallasgreen was the nearest Church. I will try my luck with Griffiths Valuation.

Thanks for trying to help.....Sean Sullivan
