Gillane/Quilty

LimerickColmanswell (Limerick)

Greetings--We are looking for any birth or baptism info on Gillanes and Quiltys from Colmanswell area. John Quilty was born about 1818 in Foxhall East Colmanswell and he married Mary Gillane. She was born 1827 in Colmanswell. Her siblings were Michael dob 1828, John dob 1831, Dennis dob 1836, Patrick dob 1840, and James dob 1841. They all emigrated prior to 1849. The Gillane parents might be named John and Mary but that is pretty much family lore. The parents of John Quilty are not known at all. John Quilty and Mary Gillane may have been married in Ireland prior to emigration.

Our questions are two: whether it is possible to find any records for the births or marriage? Are the names Gillane and Quilty still in the area?

All help is so welcomed!

Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

The RC records for Colmanswell RC parish start in September 1841 but there is a two year gap from November 1844 to January 1847. I checked on Roots Ireland and did not find a John Quilty/Mary Gillane marriage record anywhere in Limerick.. Here is the link to the parish register for Colmanswell  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0011

I did some further searching and found a Maria Gillane 1826 baptismal record in the neighboring RC parish of Rockhill/Bruree (see below). There were other children for the same parents including a Michael in 1828 (see below). Any chance this is your Gillane family?

Hi Jeanie,

I was born and reared in Foxhall East though my parents only moved to the area when they married.

I can see from the Tithe Applotments (basically a tax list) that Micheal Gillane had a farm leased in Foxhall East in 1828, see

http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=gillane&firstname=michael&county=Limerick&parish=&townland=Foxhall&search=Search

When Griffiths Valuation was prepared in 1853 (basis for another tax list) the family were no longer in Colmanswell. This may be Mary's grandfather. I can't be sure but I think that the farm that Michael Gillane had was 100 acres of the 115 acres holding that William R Sanders held in 1853 in Griffiths Valuation. See

http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/z/zoomifyDynamicViewer.php?file=171059&path=./pix/171/&rs=14&showpage=1&mysession=2490713601192&width=900&height=680

I do not see any Quilty recorded in Foxhall East. In the adjoining townland of Fort, John, James and Patt Quilty are recorded as having land in 1828 Tithe Applotments. In Griffiths Valuation in 1853 there is a Maurice Quilty in Fort East. I note that you indicated that John Quilty was born in Foxhall East about 1818. This may well be the case, however if this referenc came from a record of the marriage of John and Mary it is likely that any reference to location refers to the wife rather than the husband.

By the 1901 census there were no Gillane or Quilty families in Colemanswell. There are a number of Sheedy families appearing in Bruree but I do not se any in Colmanswell.

Let me know if you have any queries.

Best Regards

Hi Ger and Roger, THANKS so much for your info and time! I do think that the Maria Gillane and Michael Gillane that Roger found are my Mary and Michael.  I tried the link to NLI but it seemed to reference baptism much later in the 1840s. Maybe the baptism records found were on Roots Ireland? I cannot access that site. Could i ask you Roger to send along the other children's baptims records for Thomas Gillane and Johanna Sheedy? There are definite gaps in our records of this family where other children could fit in. And Ger, I need some time to wade through your great info.  But this does raise a question I always have..I think you both are Irish? So as an American it is SO hard for me to get a sense of distance in Ireland. I mean, in the US, distances are HUGE. So how likely is it for families in nearby parishes--both civil and Catholic--to marry and interact? I guess, how far is TOO far at this point in Irish history?

Again, THANK you!!! you two have been super kind and generous with info and time.  Please let me know if you can answer my further questions. I hope so!!!! we want to visit these places in the next few years!

Jeanie:

Since I live in the States (Baltimore), I will defer to Ger on your distance question except to say that it was not unusual to have a couple marry and they were from neighboring parishes.

Below are five more baptismal records including a twin for Maria. The NLI register starts in 1842 but Roots has records back to 1825. The Registers on the NLI site were filmed in the 1950s. I'm guessing that the parish later found an earlier register book that went back to 1825 so when the Heritage folks in Limerick came to transcribe the data the earlier book was available, and they were able to go back to 1825. One caution. Roots does indicate that there is a gap in the baptismal records for 1835 and 1838-1839. Basically that info was lost which explains why we don't have a record for Denis and Patrick.

Let me know if you have questions.

Roger

Jeanie,

Practically all of my ancestors were tenant farmers so my experience is in that context. I find that people that married did not live that far apart and in a lot of cases would have married within the parish. In some of these cases they would have been arranged marriages. They may have travelled further to find land that they could rent but this was still within a 20 mile radius. The few marriages that I have seen where the couple had come from different areas were where one person had travelled to find work and then married someone locally. In the few cases where I saw this happen, it was mostly the girl that had travelled to find work but I am not sure this was typical. In my case, all of my known ancestors (some of which I can trace to the Eighteenth century were within a 20 radius of each other.

My wife's great-grandmother Johanna Culhane was also reared in Foxhall East (same farm as I was reared on). I have had difficulty tracking the Culhane family because there were a couple of Culhane families living in Foxhall (East and West). Going back over my notes on Foxhall I came across a headstone record of a Mary Quilty that was married to a John Culhane. There are a number of John Culhane's in the records and I haven't been able to track which family this is. I am only bring this up out of interest at this stage and also to see if Roger can add anything about this family (I do not have access to Roots either but I must take a short subscription at some stage). Roger, I would appreciate any information you can fine. The link to the headstone is:

wow! thank you Ger and Roger! so much to here from you both to go over.  SOOO much thanks.  I will go through all this in the next few weeks with my sister and mom. I will probably have questions at that point? I hope that is ok? And love the historic graves link Ger...very interesting.  But I will review what we know and what Roger you have sent from Roots Ireland. And thanks for clarifying what the dates are on Roots Ireland...goes further back than NLI.  excellent. I will review and get back to you....headed to a graduation for my son--and from St Patrick's High School! Christian Brothers. But did want to touch base with THANKS!

My name is George Quain and I just wish to state that My  GranAunt was married to a John Culhane from Colmanswell but as far as I know there were several Culhane's families about at that time. That patricular farm is now farmed by James Keane from Colmanswell who would be my third cousin once removed.

My Great-Grandmother is also a (Jo)hanna Culhane from Foxhall! Equally having great difficulty in tracing the Culhane side of the tree and likewise came across Mary Quilty married to John Culhane, but I don't know if they are related to Johanna Culhane. I also think that as I've come across so many women named Johanna (or variations of) that I've now lost confidence about whether she was Johanna or Hanna....

Leish

The initial inquiry here was for the name GILLANE; not Culhane. They are different names but maybe there was a misspelling in your tree. Mary Gillane born Jan 1826 in Rockhill Bruree had a twin sister, Johanna. Mary named her daughter by her first husband, John Quilty, Johanna after her sister.

If you think this is in fact your family, contact me and we can try to figure things out. But the name in the records in Bruree is GILLANE.

Best wishes no matter where you research takes you!
