Purtells of Castleconnell

Castleconnell (Limerick)

I've been trying to research Purtells and O'Brien's who lived in and around Castleconnell, apparently, 18th and 19th C.

My ancestor, John Purtell b.c 1801 Rathkeale was sentenced to 7 years (crime unknown) transportation in 1822 (Australia) Convict papers say he was the son of Patrick Purtell and Alice O'Brien of Castleconnell. Another Purtell, William, b.c 1778 Castleconnell, was aboard the same ship: Mangles 2 which left Cork in 1822.

If anyone has any information, or can point me in the right direction for further research, I would love to hear from you.

Nicole there are 176 trees on Ancestry for your John. Baptism records did not start in Rathkeale until 1811. I found this record on RootsIreland (paid subscription) and verified the original record showed Ellen O'Brien. Maybe John's mother's name was Ellen??

Consider that Eilis is the Irish form of the name Alice, pronounced Ailish. Perhaps Ellen was an interpretation of Eilish?

Nicole,

I found this tree on Geni

John Purtell (c.1801 - 1872) - Genealogy

Some of the trees on Ancestry suggest John was arrested for participating in the Rockite Rebellion.

Captain Rock: The Irish Agrarian Rebellion of 1821-1824

Rathkeale History – Rathkeale

1820: The area around Rathkeale and Newcastle became the centre of the rebellion known as the Rockite rebellion. Among incidents in and around Rathkeale were the ambushing of a planned attack on a tithe proctors house by the local militia which left 4 of the attackers dead or near dead and the assassination of the local Police constable Captain Going because local belief was that at least one of the bodies he had buried in quick lime near the Deel bridge was of someone who was still alive.
