Bruree / Rockhill ancestors: Collopy, Carroll, Connell, Ryan

Bruree (Limerick)

My Great Grandfather is John Collopy B. 1823 Ballynoran - d. 1913 Stillwater, Minnesota, USA - I believe is father was Thaddy/Thaddeus Collopy B. qbt 1870 Coolreagh/Ballynoran. No death info. Thaddy's wive is Mary O'Connellalso from Coolreagh, south of Rockhill. She was b. abt. 1794 & d. 1869 in Stillwater, Minnesota. No records for her husband were found in shiplists, but I did find Mary arriving with one of her daughters in NY. They had 6 children, 3 boys, 3 girls. All of the children immigrated to the UYSA & settled in Minnesota.

The Limerick Regional Archives helped me a great deal back in 1997. But they no longer are operating, as far as I know. Any help on these families is greatly appreciated!

We did visit back in 1997 and learned the Collopy's lived very close to the Rockhill RC Church. Found no ancestors buried nearby though.

A couple items of interest which you may already have, First, the Tithe listings for Bruree civil parish (1827-1833) show four Collopy records in Ballinoran townland. There were two Johns, a William and a Maurice. The record is not very clear and I believe the Maurice was actually Michael. Also, there may have been only one John who had two leases.

NOTE our links are not working properly so you may have to go the National Archives site.

The Bruree/Rockhill RC records are spotty before 1840. I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland and found a baptismal record for a Thomas Collopy with father Thady and mother Maria Connell. The baptismal date was March 27 1831 and the church was Bruree/Rockhill.

Yes, 2 Johns, William & Michael are all our ancestors. William is the eldest, followed by John (my 2nd ggrandfather, Anastasia, Michael, Thomas, Mary & Catherine (twins) Collopy all children of Thomas/Thady Collopy & Mary Connell. All but the eldest, William, arrived in NY between 1850 and 1856. William, John and his wife, Mary Carroll were the first to arrive on 5 Aug 1851 aboard the Harriet.

I'm wondering if you can find the marriage and/or death of Thomas & Mary Connell Collopy's daughter, Catherine, born in March of a833 in Rockhill. I cannot find any arrival date or any other information about her. Thomas/Thady Collopy also seems to simply disappear from the records. No death record in either country. No arrival in the USA. His wife, Mary Connell Collopy did come to the US. She died in Stillwater, MN, 15 May 1869 at the age of 75 years, according to her headstone. Possibly John or Thomas O'Connell (father and/or brother(s) ), according to correspondence from Dr. O'Mahony 13 Feb 1997.

I would love to learn more about Mary Connell's ancestors, if at all possible.

Also, Thomas & Mary Connell Collopy had another son named John, b. abt 1792 d. unknown. He married Mary Kelly in Rockhill on 17 Feb. 1828. Witnesses:David Russell & ? Kelly. This couple had two sons: James b. 14 Dec 1828 sp. Thomas & Mary Collopy. And John, bpt. 16 Apr 1833, sps. Thomas Connell & Kate Kelly. This family has not been found in subsequent records. It's possible they went to Australia, but no sources have been found for the family.

By the way, I have now donated, as requested.

Sincerely, Pat Dolan

Pat:

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. A few RC parishes maintained some death information but Rockhill/Bruree parish did not maintain death records. Likely Thomas/Thady died pre-1864 in Ireland and no record exists. Catherine likely died young and no record exists.

I have a question regarding your last paragraph in your most recent reply. How could Thomas/Thady and Mary have a child John in 1792?

I also want to clarify the first paragraph of your last response. The Tithe listings from 1827-1833 showed adults who were leasing land and had to pay a Tithe to the local Church of Ireland parish. The two Johns, William and Thomas would not be children of Thady/Thomas Collopy and Mary Connell Collopy. Possibly the John in 1792 would be one of the Johns.

Let me know if you have questions.

Ah... that's good to know. Brothers, perhaps?

Thanks for that clarification!
