Searching for information on Marcus (or Mark) Lynch, Ballyelan townland

LimerickBallingarry Connello (Limerick)

Marcus/Mark Lynch, ca. 1832-1869, was a son of Johanna (Butler) Lynch who leased about 87 acres in Ballyelan townland beginning about 1850. The farm was previously leased by Timothy Curtin.

I am not related to the Lynch family but I am related to Mary Collins, widow of Mathew, who sub-leased a tiny plot from Curtin and then from Lynch, and who emigrated to Connecticut in the U.S. about 1857.

I would like to know more about the circumstances of Marcus Lynch's death on 11 March 1869, "of injury to brain, homicidal." The probate index of 1870 (online) indicated that his estate, worth about 500 L(pounds) was awarded to his wife Margaret. They had sons Mark (b. 1858) and Thomas (b. 1859)

Other related Lynches held substantial leases in Dollas townland, and in neighboring Croom townlands.

Thank you for any information (or hints), Paul Keroack

The following baptisms are for three children of Mark Lynch and Johanna Butler.  There were boys born in 1830 and 1832, but neither was called Marcus.  Is it possible one of them later went by the name Marcus?

Perhaps contact the heritage societies in Croom or Co. Limerick to see if they have any information about the murder of Marcus.

Paul, I was wondering if you’ve come across any additional information yet regarding Marcus Lynch? He was my great-great-grandfather. Marcus and his wife, Margaret (Mulcahy) had four sons that I know about: Thomas (Aug 1859 -1932), Timothy (Jul 1863-1930), John (around 1868-?), and Patrick (Dec 1868-1935).

Looking forward to hearing if you've uncovered anything new. I would love to know more about the circumstances of his death too or any other information you might have.

Thanks

Brian

Bryan,

I have read your post of 17 Dec, re Lynch and families of Ballyelan, etc.

I do not have access to the newspaper database you noted, but I found scanned probate documents which included an 1870 bequest to Margaret Mulcahy Lynch from Marcus - very brief, specifying the 500-L inheritance. If I can find the link again, I will send it. I had an ancestor, a widow Mary Collins, who rented a tiny plot from Curtin and then Lynch. She then accompanied her son Michael to the U.S. in 1860.

I also have a Costelloe ancestor from a large Croom family, neighbors to Lynches there. William Costelloe married in Bruree in 1838, but died there before his widow and children could emigrate to the U.S. Their daughter Johanna married in Connecticut, to a relative of Mary Collins, John Downes. This couple the became my maternal great-grandparernts.

I would be interested in any information connected to your Lynches and also to my families noted above
