Nevilles of Limerick
I have possibly 3 branches of the Neville family from Limerick who came to Australia. Sorry for all the confusion, but they are difficult families to work out.
1 Daniel Neville b c 1790 m Johanna King c 1811. He was convicted (see attached doc) in 1826 and arr here on Boyne 1826, leaving wife and family at home. He later petitioned, and was successful in having his family come out in 1834.
Ch *Mary, James Patrick, Edward, Margaret, Johanna, *Ellen * either died or married in Ireland.
From the newspaper article, his younger brother, probably John b c 1800 came as convict on Mangles 1822 - sentenced Limerick under Insurrection Act. He mar Honora Harnett ch Patrick, John, James, Daniel, Mary, Richard, Elizabeth.
The family now becomes very confused. In 1853 when John disappeared (later found dead, thrown from a horse) a Patrick Neville who said that he was John's brother, offered a reward for info re John. But according to attached paper, their brother Patrick had been hanged.( for murder of Major Going) In view of this, are Dan and John not brothers or did someone change their name? But they were related, as it seems that Dan's family lived with John for some years and Dan was probably also there after he gained his Tof L. There is still more confusion when Dan's son Patrick arr on Andromeda in 1834 with his brothers Edward and James. There is no more record of this Pat.
Another possible brother was also transported 1829,for stealing money -Thomas, b c 1794.Thomas m Judith Stapleton. He took up land near John and was from Limerick. Ch Mary, Thomas, Richard , Thomas, Honora.
Patrick (b c 1808 bro of Dan) married Margaret Stapleton. After Margaret's death he mar Mary Shanahan( b 1833 dau of Thomas Shanahan and Bridget Burns) who was said to have been a relation. There is no record of the arrival of this Pat, But his DC gives his parents as Patrick Neville and Maragret Byrne (Burns) so presumably also parents of Dan and John.if they were infact brothers. Family apparently not pleased that he married some one so young.
Dan was from Askeaton and gives referees on the petition as John Hunt,( Ballyengland) Edmund Hunt,(AincherockI) (probably Inchirourke) Rev Michael Fitzgerald (Askeaton) John Dwyer ( Askeaton) and John O'Dell .So perhaps Dan worked on a Hunt estate.
2 Another Patrick Neville b 1819 arr free 1841 on Glenswilly with his sister Mary b 1818. Two other sisters came later Ellen b1835 arr 1849 and Margaret b1830 arr 1850.They came to their uncle John's also.Their parents were Jeramiah Neville and Margaret O'Brien (Bryan) both of whom were dead by 1849. This family was from Newbridge or Alta Villa or Rathkeale and apparently Pat was sent out to his Uncle John ( see above) to prevent him getting into trouble.- but he was in plenty of trouble here1
Taken literally, all this would make Jeremiah a brother of John and possibly also Daniel and Thomas.
This Pat mar 1855 Mary Sarah Hammond ch Jeremiah, Patrick,Thomas, Robert, John, Daniel, Ellen, Thomas, Catherine, Edmund, Mary Sarah, Ellem , Margaret - a number of these children had hare lips.
Patrick called his property Altavilla, so maybe the family woked on that estate or at the flour mill.
3 Patrick Neville ( Drominoona b c 1820 m Ellen Donoghue m 1844 in Askeaton. He had brothers Michael (m Honora Mulqueen) Denis ( m Ellen Murphy) John ( would like to find who he married).and 3 sisters Margaret, Ina, Mary
ch Mary, John, Denis, Margaret, Patrick, Michael, James,Thomas. Michael and Thomas came to Aust 1879
I have fair amount of info re this family but would like to find the parents of Patrick and Ellen if possible Pat's father may have been Denis.
Michael married Catherine Neville, daughter of Pat and Mary Sarah Hammond.Tthey too are said to have been connected somehow.
This is all a bit confusing but any further information about any of these families would be very welcome. I would particularly like to find the connection between them.
