John Downey and Clarinda Supple of Ardcanny Pallas

LimerickArdcanny (Limerick)

Hi there

I've been researching John Downey and Clarinda Supple of Ardcanny and Pallas. I'm hoping someone here might help me get past some roadblocks.

I have tracked down John Downey's baptism in May 1834 - parents Timothy Downey and Mary Ryan http://registers.nli.ie/pages/vtls000634959_019

However I can find no information on either Timothy Downey or Mary Ryan, apart from a mention of Timothy in Griffiths Valuation for Pallas, Rathkeale in 1850

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam

Regarding Clarinda Supple, I believe she came from a Palatine family. On her marriage record, it says her father was William Supple https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGCG-HDW

The Griffiths Valuation I linked to above also lists a William Supple, so it looks like they were neighbours!

This might be the same William Supple (born 1804) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FR9Z-B4M whose parents are listed as Philip Supple and Margaret.

There the trail runs cold.

Can anyone help?

many thanks

Hi Col

I really appreciate the reply!

I hadn't come across the Bridget or Peggy Supple records before - it would be great to confirm who Clarinda's mother was, and also to confirm William Supple's parents.

John Downey's parents are definitely Timothy Downey and Mary Ryan - you can see the it on the baptism cert I linked to in my first post. That was from Kildimo parish records.

I would love to find Timothy and Mary's baptism or marriage records.

thanks again, and best wishes

Brian

No luck with the above, Brian but Clarinda is so uncommon that perhaps she was recorded as something else at birth/baptism?

There are 27 Supple Baptism records for Ardcanny & Chapel Russell Parish (C I) 1803-79; assuming the marriage took place in the bride's home parish as was the custom

If Clarinda was married in 1856 she was probably born & baptised around 1835;

These are the only 2 with father William of the right age

Thanks again Col. I really appreciate it.

You are probably right that maybe Clarinda was not her birth name. The strange thing is that Peggy is usually short for Margaret, and Clarinda's daugher was named Margaret. But why would the baptism say Peggy and not Margaret?

Where did you find the Peggy Supple birth record? Is there a Protestant birth records website?

thanks

The records were from www.rootsireland.ie/ which is a subscription site.
