WHELAN surname in Abbeyfeale

Abbeyfeale (Limerick)

Some years ago I was told my husband's family had a connection to Abbeyfeale; his great uncle, Fr. Edmond Joseph Walsh, made several visits to Abbeyfeale during the 1920's, but we did not know which branch of the family he was visiting. Surnames Walsh and McSweeney proved futile so I moved on to using another family member, John Whelan, Edmond's grandfather.

John was born in Ireland, June of 1836; he died in St Louis Missouri USA on 9 July 1901. I feel confident I have located his baptism record on Ancestry which shows Joannes Whelan born 1836, baptized July 1836, in Abbeyfeale, Limerick. Parents were listed as Laurentio Whelan and Joanna Scanlan.  So far, I have not located any further information through Ancestry for these names.Also,a couple of searches during John's early years, he was listed as Michael John Whelan.

Can someone assist me with confirming the information I have or provide me with additional information on John and his parents.

Thank you, Nan Walsh

Hi Nan, Without seeing more information about John in the U.S., it's difficult to confirm that you have found his baptismal record.  If you look at the federal censuses in which John appears, you will see a variety of birth years given for him. I found 1836, 1839, and 1842.

The names of the parents on the baptism you located--Laurence and Joanna--do not match the names of any of Michael's children.  On the censuses, I see Annie, Bridget, and Michael.  Assuming there were no sons before Michael, I would guess that John's father was also named Michael. His mother was likely Bridget or Ann.  There were Irish naming patterns, and if John and his wife followed them, the first son would have been named after his paternal grandfather.  The first two daughters would have been named after their grandmothers.

Keep in mind that it is possible Abbeyfeale was not John's birthplace.

Also keep in mind that Whalen, Whelan, Phalen, Phelan are interchangeable, so you might find your Whalen ancestors called Phelan, etc., in the records.

Thank you, Patricia.....I will research further and hopefully locate more valid information.
