Prior, Ballinamore
My great grandfather, James Prior, was born in (or near) Ballinamore in about 1855. He moved to England and settled in Darlington, Co Durham, where he married in 1881. His marriage certificate, which I have, says his father was Thadeus Prior, farmer.
I've searched far and wide, but haven't been able to find any baptisms (the family was Catholic) which fit, but there's a strong possibility that James was one of the children of Thadeus Prior and Rose Gilheany, for three reasons:
- they had children born in 1845, 1848, 1850, 1852, 1857, 1859 and 1861, so there's a space around the time James was born and I wonder if the record has been lost or badly mistranscribed
- three men with the sames names, ages etc. as Thady and Rose's children also ended up in Darlington or elsewhere in Co Durham, at least briefly and it looks as if at least one married there, so perhaps there was already a family connection and/or several siblings moved together
- I had a great aunt Rose (James' daughter), and other names from this family appear in mine - although most of them are not exactly unusual names
One other possible clue is a man called Patrick Havey, born about 1851 and also from Ballinamore. In 1881 he was lodging with my future great grandmother's parents in Darlington, but he then moved in with James and his wife and was lodging with them in 1891, 1901 and 1911. I wonder if he and James were friends who came over together (and indeed whether James met his wife through his friend lodging with her family).
I'd love to know for certain who my great great grandparents were, and if anybody can help I'd be very grateful. I also know there are still Priors in Ballinamore, and it would be great to find some new relatives!
