Visiting Ireland, Searching for Notley around Drumod / Aghamore

LeitrimAnnaduff (Leitrim)

I am visiting Ireland from the US March 26 - Apr. 3 to connect with part of my heritage for my 40th birthday. I have never been and I couldn't be more excited! I have done some research already. I have searched some of the 1911 census available online, and more recently I splurged on an Ancestry.com membership to go back further.

Here's what I know:

My great grandfather was Frederick Notley (23 Nov 1902) born in Drumod, Leitrim and emigrated to US sometime before 1930. Siblings: John, George, Florence, Albert, Walter, Violet, Arthur.

My great-great grandfather was Robert Notley (6 Jan 1846 - 22 Oct 1920) born in Aghamore, Leitrim. Son of John Notley (1805 - 1881). Buried at St. Ann's in Annaduff (as seen on Ancestry.com). I would love to visit this church and am renting a car, so I'm able to drive there.

Religion was Church of Ireland. He was married to Annie Thompson Notley, born in Granard County. They married in 1879, registered in Granard Ireland. He died in Mullingar 12 January 1930.

Census in 1911 listed residence as 2 Apr Aghamore, Drumod, Leitrim, Ireland.

My ancestry goes back a bit, and I've even found our family crest through my research. Here is a link to my tree on Ancestry. I'm not sure how familiar the Notley name is, but I searched and found a post from 2013 from someone looking for an old Notley farm. Robert is listed as a farmer in the 1911 census.

It felt very special to find this organization and board, I am very grateful for your time and for what you do!

Thanks for your very positive message about IRO!

Below is a link to the Find a Grave web site which has pictures of six Notley headstones. FYI. The 1926 census will be released in mi-April.

Hello Wes,

Your Nemenz Public Family Tree referenced in your post of 25 February shows that Robert Bob Notley was born in Derrybrack, County Leitrim about 1770 and that he died in Derrybrack on 14 July 1868.

I located Robert Notley in an Irish property tax record called Griffiths Valuation at the Ask About Ireland website. You can search Griffiths Valuation at: https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

The Valuation shows that Robert Notley held a lease in Derrybrack. I don't know if you have this record and so I'll provide the details about Robert Notley in Griffiths Valuation below.

Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland from 1847 to 1864. The valuation for Derrybrack, Civil Parish of Annaduff, County Leitrim was completed by the year 1856, 12 years before Robert's death.

Griffiths Valuation shows that Robert leased a House, offices, and over 105 acres of land from an Immediate Lessor named Josias Rowley. Josias Rowley may have been the owner of the lease, or he may have worked for an absentee owner as his representative.

The Griffiths Valuation page for Derrybrack is attached to this reply, and shows that the land Robert (indicated by the orange double arrow) leased was valued at 74 Pounds, and that the House and offices were valued at 4 Pounds. The total valuation for his lease was 78 Pounds. He would have paid a percentage of this value toward the tax.

An Office in Griffiths Valuation could be any type of outbuilding, such as a barn, stable, blacksmith shop, piggery, etc.

To the left of Robert's name are a map reference number and letter, 1, subdivision a. The map reference number and letter are location markers showing where Robert's lease was situated on a Griffiths Valuation Map, which is also attached to this reply.

The other two leaseholders in Derrybrack are Michael Reynolds and Peter Flynn. They each leased a house but no land. Their Immediate Lessor was Robert Notley, who would likely have worked as the middleman for Joasias Rowley.

Going to the Griffiths Valuation Map you'll see the double orange arrow pointing to map reference 1, subdivision a. Robert's farm would be located just above the letter a on the map. Just to the left of his lease is Lough Tap.

A Google Satellite View of the same area that Robert leased is attached to this reply. It is located at the end of an un-named, split drive, off the L7464 Derrybrack Road.

You can see the L7464 Derrybrack Road, and the long drive leading to the farm on this Google Map : https://tinyurl.com/3zn7fthu

This Google Street View shows the L7464 Derrybrack Road on the left, and the beginning of the driveway leading to the farm and the right: https://tinyurl.com/3m7msjdd

Another Google Street View shows where the driveway to the farm splits. The street view doesn't go much farther than this: https://tinyurl.com/27vmtsbz

The Following Google Map shows that Derrybrack, indicated by the red teardrop icon, is just west of Aghamore: https://tinyurl.com/3uyv77be

Before going to Ireland in late March, consider fill out a Meet and Greet form available at the Ireland Reaching Out link at: https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

After submitting the form, Ireland Reaching Out will see if there is a local volunteer who is available to meet you in the Aghamore and Derrybrack area of County Leitrim for the dates you are there. If a volunteer is available, they may know who currently lives on the farm occupied by Robert Notley in 1855.

Going back to the Griffiths Valuation page, you'll see the townlands recorded after Berrybrack are Derrylaur and Derryoughter.

In Derrylaur Francis and John Notley leased houses, offices, and land from Josias Rowley. You'll also see that John Notley was the Immediate Lessor for the property leased by Thomas Healy in Derrylaur.

In the townland of Derryoughter a James Notley leased a house but no land from James Acheson, who would have been the representative of Josias Notley.

The following Google Map shows the close proximity of the townlands of Aghamore, Derrybrack, Derrylaur, and Derryoughter. Derryoughter is represented by the red icon.

Derryoughter is located on the northwest shore of the Drumgilra Lough, just south of Annaduff: https://tinyurl.com/n3a5bdnb

The map also shows that this area of County Leitrim is on the border with County Roscommon.

Have a fantastic time in Ireland.

Best Wishes,

Dave Boylan
