Assistance With Visiting Leitrim Needed

Leitrim

Hello Everyone.

I am researching my McGreal and McLoughlin family in Leitrim, and I am looking for some advice or assistance...

In August I am planning to visit the small townland of Cornaguillagh, near Dowra, where my great-grandmother was born and raised. I would like to get permission to access the property, which is far from the main road, or at least find someone local who could accompany me so that I am not seen as trespassing on private property. Does anyone know of people in the Dowra area or organizations who could help reach the right people?

Thank you!

Can you complete our Meet and Greet form https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet  which will alert our coordinator of your visit in August?

Do you need any additional assistance with your McGreal family? The 1901 census showed three McGreal households in the townland of Cornaguillagh.

Thank you, Roger.

I completed the form. My family in the 1901 census, specifically, was Patrick and Anne McGreal, although the others were related. I have extensively researched this family and it's unlikely there is much more to be known, although any local insights and stories would be of interest. What is of most interest at the moment is being able to visit the exact location of the McGreal home (17a in Griffith's Valuation). Any assistance that could be provided with that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

JonBoody,

It may be that we have a volunteer in that part of Leitrim who can help you, but if not, my advice would be to go to the townland and ask locally. You will have noted that there’s a lane off the R207 which leads up to the area you are interested in. There looks to be a house on that lane. I would knock on the door and ask if they know who owns the land today. (They may own it). Take it from there.

There are parts of the world where you might get shot for walking on someone’s private land. Ireland is not one of those places and it should be pretty straightforward to get approval. The far end of that lane doesn’t look to be used much and no-one may even notice you up there.

Hello Jon,

A Google Map shows that the Dowra, County Cavan Post Office (An Post) along the R200 road, is about a mile north of Cornaguillagh. The Dowra postmaster may know, or know someone who knows the owner of the land in Cornaguillagh. See the Google Map: https://tinyurl.com/2r864pe4

Here is a Google Street View of the post office: https://tinyurl.com/4jkkmfjd

The An Post DOWRA website gives the phone number and the days and hours the post office is open: https://www.anpost.com/Store-Locator/DOWRA

We have a technical issue which prevents links from opening. Our systems staff is looking at the issue.
