FitzMaurice family from Roscommon
Hi Everyone,
I am researching my FitzMaurice family from Roscommon. My GGGgrandfather was Edward FitzMaurice. He was born in Carrick-on-Shannon, Aughrim parish about 1770. He married Mary Lavin about 1804. Mary was born about 1782 possibly in the nearby townland of Killukin. They were Roman Catholic. Edward enlisted in the British army in 1805 and served until he retired in 1831. He served overseas in Nova Scotia, Canada and Jamaica, West Indies. He also served in several locations in Ireland. He was in the 101st regiment of foot and also with the 1st and 9th Royal Veterans Battalions.
Edward and Mary had 7 children. Patrick, Catherine, Edward, Mary Ann, John, James, and Ellen. Edward retired in 1831 and emmigrated to New Brunswick, Canada with 5 of his children. Edward Jr. was born in Killukin in 1817, John was born in Jamaica about 1814 and Mary Ann was also born in Jamaica about 1811.James and Ellen were born somewhere in Ireland, possibly near Maryborough, Cork county. Patrick and Catherines birthplaces are unknown, possibly in Nova Scotia or Jamaica. Catherine married Bernard McDermott in 1832 in St.John, New Brunswick. I believe she died shortly afterwards. I am descended from John who married Mary Schools in New Brunswick. I have good imformation on the descendents of the 5 children that came to New Brunswick but I am now trying to find out more about the 2 children who stayed in Ireland. They were Patrick and Edward Jr.
Patrick and Edward Jr. both served in the British army for a while but I don't think they stayed in very long. I found the baptism record for Edward jr. in Killukin, but I have not found out anything else about him. They were both apparently alive in 1842 as they are mentioned in their fathers will at this time. Patrick, who I believe was the eldest son received very little in his fathers will. I am assuming that this was because he received his inheritance when his father left Ireland, possibly his fathers farm? This is just a working Hypothesis at this time, but there was a Patrick FitzMaurice who had a farm in Cloonfad More around this time. I am trying to find land records or lease records to see if there is a connection, and I am also researching this Patrick FitzMaurice and his descendents.
There is also a John FitzMaurice that was born in Killukin about 1780 and that served with Edward Sr. with the 101st regiment of foot at the same time. I believe that this John was a brother or close cousin to Edward. I am researching him also. I believe that after John retired, that he also returned to Roscommon county.
I would like to make contact with any descendents of Patrick, Edward Jr., or John FitzMaurice who still live in Ireland or wherever they may have moved to.
Thank you,
Bernie FitzMaurice
