Ruth:

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located one lead. Located a baptismal record for a Hubert Matimer (as transcribed) with father James Matimer and mother Anne Kilbane. The RC parish was Kiltoghert   Records for that parish go back to 1827  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0152  so I'm not sure where the rest of the baptisms occurred. I did not find James Mortimer in the 1857 Griffiths Valuation.

Thank you and Yes I did find the Hubert Matimer and although a possibility the names are not spelled correctly Also not only can I  not find a baptism certificate but there is no record of a marriage (and they ere very Catholic) or a immigration record for any of the them Jane. Bernard or Patrick. They all came over in different years. My g-grandmother's marriage certificate (NYC Jane1885) Both her and Bernard were here both writing their name Mortimer Mystery my family has been trying to solve for 20 years! We just don't know where to look next

Thanks for your help

Ruth:

I located the marriage record. Anne Gilban married James Matymore April 20 1846 at Kiltoghert RC church No witnesses shown

I can't explain the gap in records from 1846-1856

Using Matymore I went back to Roots Ireland and found baptismal records for Patrick Mattimore baptized April 27 1856 father James Mattimore and mother Anne Kilbane

Also found Anne M.Mattimore baptized April 18 1858 same parents    Is Anne Jennie?

Also found Bryan Mattemore (Bryan and Bernard are interchangeable) baptized March 11 1860 same parents

Also found Peter Mattinmore baptized September 21 1862 same parents

Also found John Mattimore baptized October 29 1864 same parents  (I did not find a civil birth record).

Looks like they changed their surname when they came to America.

One last item. Roots had a second baptismal record for Hubert-April 26 1854 in Kiltoghert which I think is the correct date.

Ruth:

I went back to the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and found a James Mattimore in Carrickslavan townland in Kiltoghert civil parish. This must be where your family lived.

1901 census  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Leitrim/Gowel/Carrickslavan/1485311/   James must have been born in the gap period from 1846-1856 and John was born in 1864 so he understated his age

1911 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Leitrim/Gowell/Carrickslavin/653350/

I did not find a death record for James Sr. or Anne and also none for James Jr. or John. We don't know if their deaths were civilly recorded and how the surname was spelled.

Great job Roger!

Most Mortimers (Mortimar, Mortimore, Mortimoore, Mortimeure, Mortimeur, Mortimour etc) were originally Mac/Ó Muircheartaigh and often turn up as Murtagh.

Ó Maolmuaidh on the other hand, often anglicized Mattimoe (also Millmoe) is a rarer surname particular to Co. Roscommon (Carrick sits on its border) hence Mattimore,  Mattymore, Mattemore, Mattinmore and more.

Kate ... we'd love if you added  Jane and her parents to our Kiltoghert Ancestors Roll Call and reconnected them to Carrickslavan.

Hello - I'm also descended from this family (hi, Ruth!). Here's what I've found so far:

James Matymore and Anne Gilbane married in Kiltoghert parish on April 20, 1846. On later records, their married last name is usually Mattimoe/Matimo/Matinmore, etc. On their children's baptism records, Anne's maiden name is spelled with a K instead of a G.

In 1853, James & "the Widow Kilbane" leased a 6-acre plot in Carrickslavan townland, Gortbonaugh subdivision, in Carrick-On-Shannon. (I assume the widow was his mother-in-law?)

In 1857, James leased an 11-acre plot in Carrickslavan townland from Gilbert King. No mention of the Widow Kilbane.

In 1870, James was in prison for about a week.

In 1901 and 1911, Anne was a widow, and her unmarried sons James Jr and John lived with her on the same land in Carrickslavan. So James died sometime after 1870 and before 1901, but I can't find a civil or church death record.

In 1913, Anne purchased the land in Carrickslavan.

In the early 1920s, a neighbor bought the "Mattimoe fields," probably after Anne passed away. This was told to me by the person who now owns the land, and whose father-in-law was the one who purchased it in the early 1920s. Local families knew the family as Mattimoe, which they pronounce "Mattimer." And that's how I think it became "Mortimer" when the siblings emigrated to the US.

James & Anne had many children, some of whom have baptism records, but not all. Death records are hard to find, but I did find a couple in Ireland. Kiltoghert parish has no record of anyone from this family of Mattimoes being buried in the Kiltoghert graveyard. We have all three death records for the siblings who emigrated to the US.

Here's who I have for their children:

James (1849-1917 - no baptism record, but date is estimated based on census records and civil death record; he died at the Sligo asylum)

Hubert (b. 1853)

Hubert (b. 1854)

Patrick (1856-1933; emigrated to the US in early 1880s)

Ann/Anna M. (b. 1858)

Jane/Jennie (1859-1963; no baptism record (unless Jane is Anna, above); emigrated to the US in early 1880s)

Bryan (Bernard) - (1860-1933; emigrated to the US in early 1880s)

Peter (b. 1862)

John (b. 1864 according to baptism record; John was in and out of the Sligo asylum over a period of 20-ish years. It's possible he died there, but I haven't found a record.)

Bridget (no baptism record, but a civil death record at age 16 in 1884)

We have no death records for James or Anne. There's a record of Anne being sent to the Sligo asylum back in 1878. It's possible she was also there in her later years and possibly died there. That's a guess based on the family history and what the current owner of the land said she had heard about Anne. I can't find a record of it, though.

Hi small world and thank you for this. Can I ask how you are related to Jane? I know she married James Smith in Manhattan  around 1885 they moved to Jersey City where James ran a small dairy farm

Thanks

Hi Ruth -- this is Lori. I wrote the message above that you're replying to.

Since I wrote that, I have confirmed that John Mattimoe (Jane and Bernard's brother) died at the Sligo Asylum in 1937. The Mattimoe farm was put up for sale in 1926 because John was declared unable to care for the land. I think he was already in the asylum then. This also probably means that his mother Anne had passed away before 1926, because the land would have transferred to him upon her death.

I visited the Sligo county archives last year and spoke with an historian there. We were trying to determine if there had been a cemetery at the Sligo Asylum. He looked at old maps, but there was no cemetery indicated on the Asylum property. So we still don't know where John, Anne, or James Jr and Sr were buried.
