rathdowney school

LaoisRathdowney (Laois)

My great uncle Thomas Feehan of Coolrain, Co. Laois is in the 1901 census living at 2 Mill Street Rathdowney. He is 17 years old, a scholar and boarder at this address. Is there any way of finding information on the school he may have attended? I am visiting the USA in September and will be meeting up with his daughters and grandchildren and would like to be able to give them this information. I will be in Ireland at the end of May and could pick up info if I know where I can get hold of it. Thanks

Hello Maria,

According to this post, Catholics were not educated in a dedicated schoolhouse in rathdowney until 1903,

But they would have been schooled in private houses.

Best regards Michael.

Many thanks for your reply Michael. Interesting to hear there was no school as such and if my g. Uncle was educated in a private house then I will be unlikely ever to find out further info. Shame !! Thanks again. Maria.
