Hi,

I have a James Whelan (my great grandfather) born (according to his army records) in Rathdowney in 1837.  On his marriage in 1880 (after getting out of the army in 1879) he names his father as Timothy.  I have not been able to locate his birth.  On other records he just names Queens County as his place of birth with DOB ranging from 1835 to 1839 but mostly 1837.  He is 20 when he enters the Army in 1857.. Most of his army service was in India.  Grateful for any help thanks.

Hi Beverley - I found two Baptisms fror a James Whelan, father Timothy on FMP. They are both a bit confusing about where exactly though as there seems to be some crossover of Counties and I don't quite know how it works.  One is in September 1934 in the Parish of Athy - Diocese of Dublin - then it says County Laois (Queens) then it says Kildare.  Parents Timothy Whelan and Eliza Byrne. Sps Patrick Delaney and Catherine someone - hard to read. 

The other is 1836, Parish Cappinrush/Ballyfin, Diocese Kildare & Leighlin, County Laois.  Timothy and Betty Bromfield.

Sorry so late getting back to you - am stilll navigating my way around this site!  Did have a good look at that Tiimothy Wheln and Betty Bromfield but have been told that Rathdowney Baptisms are missing for the period I'm interested in.  I found a Timothy Whelan born about 1795 in Rathdowney so he could possibly be the father of my James but no way of really knowing!
