Rosanna Cahill

My gggrandmother Rose Anna Cahill stated she was from Longford. Many relatives thought this meant County Longford but my searches there came up empty. My DNA suggests the area may have been Longford little or Longford hill in western Laois. She was born in1822 and emigrated to America in 1842. I have notes in my collection stating she was baptized on 16 July 1822 to a Father Lewis Cahill and Mother Rose (maiden name could be Nagle or Nagel). She often stated her Mothers’ first name was the same as hers. Notes state St. Mary’s parish but there are many of those. Residence of Malbroch but spelling of that could also be incorrect. Baptism register listed Pat Dowd and Mary Donley as sponsors. I’ve other notes mentioning Geashill in County Offaly but this could be erroneous. That is all the seeming accurate info I have. Might you be able to help me find her ancestral line please ??   Thank you.  Mark Reimer  (McEvoy/Walsh-Ryan/Cahill)

Mark,

It sometimes helps to look at info from when someone came to the USA. Who did she marry- when and where? Who were her children- birthdates and places of birth, marriage dates and place, and death date and place. When and where did she die.?

Sometimes the original marriage and death certificates info as well as children registered info provides additional info. Have you requested any original documentation?

Regards- Mary

Mark,

Can you post her baptism record here that shows the parents and sponsors? I have searched in Laois for her baptism record, but none showed up. You mention St. Mary's parish - there is no RC parish named that in Co. Laois. The word "parish" in this sense does not mean one particular church, but rather a large area composed of many individual churches. Finally, many parishes in Ireland do not have public records or any records back to the first quarter of the nineteenth century.

Regards,

Carolyn

Hello Mark,

Rose Cahill was not baptized in County Longford or County Laois (formerly Queens County.

I found her baptism transcription at the free irishgennealogy.ie website, which shows that “Rosana” Cahill was baptized in the St. Mary Pro Cathedral, Dublin City, on 16 July 1822, which is the date of baptism you have for her.

Her father is Lewis Cahill and her mother, Rose, no maiden recorded for Rose. These are the names you have for Rose's parents.

At the time of the baptism Rosana and her parents were living in Malbro Street, Dublin.

Your records show the residence of her family was "Malbroch," which would appear to refer to Malbro Street.

Malbro Street would be the abbreviation for Marlborough Street in Dublin.

Rosana's godparents are Patk (Patrick) Dowd and Mary Donly, which are the names of the godparents you have for her.

You can access the transcription at:

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/view/?record_id=e74debe329-3690

Attached to the transcription is a link that takes you to a copy of the original St. Mary Pro Cathedral baptism register where Rosana's baptism can be found. The baptism register comes from the National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin. Go to: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/church/st.marys_pro-cathedral_mf_1820-1826_ba_0225.pdf

Once the baptism register downloads, you'll find that Rosana's is the 5th baptism recorded in the register, after the baptism of Marg Lynch.

In the right-hand portion of the baptism register is a column under the heading "Dues." I take this to mean whether or not the parents of the child being baptized had provided a donation to the church. In the row for Rosana's baptism, the answer is "Dues," which means her parents did give a donation to the church.

Mark, are you sure you have the correct information, as your gg grandmother Rose said she was baptized in County Longford, according to your records.

But, if you think the Rosana Cahill baptized in Dublin in 1822 does refer to your gg grandmother, I found the baptisms of five of her siblings at the irishgenenalogy.ie website.

For example, an older sister Eliza was baptized in St. Mary's Pro Cathedral on 28 September 1820. Her parents were Lewis Cahill and Rose, with no maiden name recorded for Rose. At the time of the baptism the family were living in Liffy Street, Dublin.

Eliza's godparents were Thos (Thomas) Donlan and Susan Fagan.

Four of Rosana and Eliza's younger siblings were all baptized in the Catholic Parish of Saints Michael and John, Dublin City.

These siblings and their dates of baptism are:

Christopher, 1 January 1825

Patrick, 12 March 1826

Lewis, September 1827

John, 23 April 1829.

----

Each of the four baptisms noted above show that the name of the father is Lewis "Cahil," and that the mother's first name maiden names are Rose McLaughlin.

I checked each baptism record to see if any of the godparents had the last name of Nagle or Nagel, but none did.

Kind Regards,

Dave Boylan

Mark,

Are you sure the Dublin Rose is the one you are seeking? I noted the father's name was Lewis, but Rose did not name any of her children Lewis. If she followed Irish naming patterns, we would expect the second son to be Lewis.

In the 1860 federal census of Wyoming, USA, Rose was said to be 26, so born c1834, not 1822. Although ages in census records are not always accurate, it is also possible that this age is correct.

Rose’s second son was named Thomas. If the couple followed Irish naming patterns, Rose’s father would have been named Thomas. Something to think about.

thank you to the many who responded. I appreciate it very much. Allow me to clarify some things/beliefs.  I strongly feel I have to discount/ignore the Dublin Rose Cahill as it is too great a distance for the other information I have and I have a good amount.  I hired the Irish Family History center and gave them my DNA through Ancestry.com. They reported strong DNA match to the Cahills in and around Longford township, County Laois. Specifically Ballacolla and Ballynagall. They think Rose may have been born in the Offerlane parish in 1822 but baptismal church records for that time period do not exist. Lacca church was mentioned by them as well. They saw Cahills in Deerpark/Offerlane in 1828. (Edward, Patrick, John and Thomas) This is only perhaps 7 minutes from Longford townland.

Castle Gardens.org records show Rose Cahill arriving in the port of New York on 3Nov1846 on the ship Findland. She was 24 then and that agrees with her birthdate of 1822 which all the other records show. Rose must have had some wealth for she purchased 120 acres of land from the State of Wisconsin on September 9th, 1847. She sold that land (February 20th 1849) to Patrick Ryan (from Killenaule Tipperary, born 1821) and married him after the sale. Their children were Julia, (my great grandmother) b.Feb 20, 1849; Michael b.Nov1851; Thomas b.May, 1853; William b. June 1855; Peter b.May 1859 and Mary b.May, 1861. The 120 acres were later sold to the children for one dollar. All this occurred in Fond du Lac county, WI in the township of Eden.

I had also hired “Longford Roots” in county Longford in 1998 and they reported no records for Rose Cahill.

Other Cahills in Fond du Lac county in that time frame were Patrick who married Mary Bolay (Bowley or Bowers) Joanna born in Ireland of Patrick Cahill and Hannah Callihan, Also a Cornelius Cahill who could be a possible brother to Rose. There also was a Julia E. Cahill married to a Charles Prescott in 1854. I know the Irish follow their naming tradition pretty thoroughly even in Wisconsin.

The Irish Family History Center also reported that I had Cahill relatives from this area move to England for employment in the mid 1800’s. My DNA states I'm related to John Cahill, who had children names Percy, b.1880 and Mary, b.1875, who moved and resided in Cheetham, Lancashire in 1871 (census) and Sherwood, Nottingham 1881 Census. This John Cahill was living with his cousin Michael during the 1881 census and it listed his birthplace as “Arless, county Queens”. I’m almost convinced that is where my Rose was from. I trust DNA information and connections.

I do appreciate all you have sent so far.  The “Find a Grave” information above on Rose (Cahill) Ryan is correct.

if someone could share specific church records from the Arless area, I’d be very happy to give them a look.  Thank you.

It’s my understanding that the first son is named after the grandfather and the second son named after the father. And I suspect I should be investigating the other Julia E. Cahill residing in the same county in Wisconsin. ??  I was impressed with the similarities reported by Patricia about the Wyans in Wyoming.  Strange coincidence. Thanks again..

Can I share this entire text with the County Offaly volunteers??  I may have chosen the wrong county initially.  Thank you all.
