National Archives Genealogy Advisory Service Confirms My Ancestors Came From Mountmellick

Laois

In a previous post under the heading I was visiting Ireland 21 April - 2 May and hoping to meet relatives I had in County Laios or Mountmellick. Many people responded to my post, among them Roger, Mary TV, Patricia and Dave.National Archives has located the Testamentary Document for Patrick Daly and will send it to me soon. I have located people who I believe are relatives who lived in Mountmellick, but it is hard for me to be certain. My biggest challenge is trying to find out if I have relatives currently living in Mountmellick. I have sent an inquiry to the Laios Library. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Respectfully,

Colonel (Retired) Edward Daily, Jr.

Patrick Daly had a number of siblings. Other than the marriage of Catherine Daly (1829) to William Chapman and Williams' death in 1874, I did not find any records in the Mountmellick area related to any of the siblings .In my view, they either died young in Ireland before civil registration of deaths (1864) or they emigrated possibly near Patrick. I also believe Catherine emigrated after William died.

Roger, thanks for your very quick reply. In the 1911 Census for Mountmellick, I found a Michael Daly, age 55, living on Bridge Street, listed as Head of Family and Sarah Daly listed as wife, with three children, Mary Kate, Sarah and Bridget. I also found another document that listed Michael (son of John and Sally) as Head of House with William and Timothy listed as Tenant. As best I can tell William (son of Patrick) and Timothy probably emigrated. There is a Catherine Chapman buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, but I can't tell if it's the daughter of Patrick. Change of name from Daly to Daily also makes for confusion.

Hopefully the National Archives or the Laios Local Studies Group may be able to provide more information. I'll keep plugging along, Marines never give up.

I saw that census record and found the family in the 1901 census in the townland of Roskeen. https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Queen_s_Co_/Cappalough/Roskeen/1649902/

His wife was Sarah Maher but I was unable to locate a civil marriage record for the couple.

Roots Ireland (subscription site) has a March 1 1852 baptismal record for a Michael Daly at Mountmellick RC church. Father was Richard Daly and mother was Catherine Molloy. I can't prove that this record pertains to the 1911 Michael Daly on Bridge St. but the year of birth of 1852 matches up with age 55 in 1911.
