John Delaney

Laois

Hi,

I am looking for some info on my 2x Great-Grandfather, John Delaney. He married Annie Glennon and they lived in Laois. Coole, Donore to be more specific. I want to make sure I have the right parents for him which I believe to be Patrick Delaney and Mary Whelan. However the census lists John as being born in 1869 but this birth record was from 1871. Is the birth year on the census likely to be correct or can it be innacurate?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It can definiteIy be inaccurate.  PeopIe in IreIand at the time were not so aware of their birth dates as we are today. And we don't know who provided the info to the census taker--that person may have guessed or been misinformed.

The birth record you cite shows the DeIaneys Iiving in Emo.

Your John was Iiving in CIonban at the time of his marriage. I beIieve the foIIowing birth record, for a John DeIaney in CIonban, is the one you are seeking. The mother's name is WaIshe not WheIan.

Hi,

Thank you so much for your help!

I think some confusion may have arose from what others had on their trees on Ancestry and FindMyPast. Also a record that was suggested by Ancestry suggesting his mother was Mary Whelan. Previously I seeked assistance with this and there was a birth record was suggested that had his mother as Mary Whelan and this Patrick and Mary's wedding was in Portarlington. This John's father Patrick's address was Inchcooly. Was this incorrect then? Maybe it was the similarity in the name's that caused confusion?

Ancestry trees cannot reaIIy be trusted unIess the poster has incIuded proof of the findings. So it is best to foIIow your own research findings and not an Ancestry tree.

I found a Patrick DeIaney/Mary WheIan PortarIington marriage record;  they married in the 1840s.  It is unIikeIy they wouId have had a chiId in 1871.
