Looking for ancestors of Dunphys who migrated to Australia in 1850 with remainder of family moving in 1853. They lived in Coolkerry near Rathdowney. I have good genealogical information on the family following their arrval in Australia, but need more on them before migration. Parents were John and Catherine and there were 11 children. Another child, Edward died before migration to Australia.
My great grandmother was born Eliza Dunphy of Rosnaclonagh, Coolrain which is near Rathdowney. Not sure if there is any link as I think may be numerous Dunphys in the area. If you don't have any luck I'll be in Ireland end of May and can try the parish records if you like?
Thanks Maria. I have checked parish records at Rathdowney and only found births for 2 of 'my' Dunphys - Sarah (b. 1843) and Anne (b. 1845). These are the 2 youngest children of John and Catherine. Goodness knows where the other 10 were born, but I'd say close by if not at Rathdowney. So, a check of parish records in whatever Laois parishes you are in would be appreciated. Yes, there are plenty of Dunphys in this area of Laois and some still remain there. I have been in contact with some of them. The trouble is they don't have family trees that got back as far as I need and which would allow me to make a link between famiies.
Hi Maria,
Were you able to find any information relating to Coolkerry Dunphys during your visit to the area earlier in the year?
Thanks,
Mike
Unfortunately, no luck with the Dunphys on the last visit to Ireland. I went to the National Library in Dublin where they have copies of all the church recordscas far back as they go but I got really frustrated as they were badly, copied, out of date order and no way to tell baptisms from marriages etc.
It didn't help that the only microfiche machine left available seemed to be on too powerful a setting with no way to change it and as a consequence everything so was too enlarged to read clearly.
Will have another try next year but if you need me to have another look please remind me nearer the time.

Thanks Maria. Its always frustrating when things don't go to plan in a library and when assistance proves difficult to find. Thanks again. Mike
