Search for great grandfather

Ballyroan (Laois)

I am trying to obtain information regarding my great grandfather John Hernan born approx 1857 in Ballyroan Laois county. I have found information stating he was in the 18th foot infantry Royal Irish in 1880s and his service number was 1580. I have had no luck contacting the Royal Irish regiment though. He moved to Medway area in Kent and married in 1907.

I am interested in his birth and any other family records from Ireland and am very grateful for any help.
