Fennell and Whelan in Barrowhouse/Tankardstown area
Hello
I have just broken through a brick wall via the newly indexed parish records, and know nowthat my great great grandmother Ann Fennell was the daughter of Michael (Mick) Fennell and Bridget Whelan. Michael and Bridget were married 13 Jan 1824 in the parish of Athy, Laois and Kildare in the Diocese of Dublin. Witnesses were Daniel Whelan (brother or father or other relative of Bridget? ) and Mary Kelly.Michael was the son of Nicholas Fennell and Ann (?). Michael and Bridget's other children were: Nicholas, John, Winnifred, Patrick, James, Mary and Joseph. The entire family emigrated to Canada circa 1849 and settled in the area of Brockville, Leeds county, Ontario Canada.
Michael died sometime before the 1851 Canadian census was taken in early 1852, presumably in Canada but I have not been able to find any death record for him. Ann married Patrick Fitzpatrick and stayed in Brockville. Nicholas moved to New York state. I believe Mary married a man named Tompkins and also moved to NY state but I'm not 100% sure yet. I don't have any information on the other siblings.
I have found some additional information on other Nicholas Fennells in the area around Barrowhouse and Tankardstown and believe that there is a connection with the family of William Fennell found at Monebrock/Tankardstownin the 1901 Irish census.
I would love to find out more about Bridget Whelan but have nothing much to work with at the moment. I have not been able to find any further information about her. She seemed to live with one or another of her children over the years.
I have found a record of birth of a Bridget Whelan who lived in Barrack St in Athy, on 20 Nov 1805, the daughter of James Whelan and Catherine Unknown. Sponsors were Ally Whelan and John Kelly. So far this is the closest to being the same Bridget who married Mick Fennell but it's still a shot in the dark.I'd sure love to have someone with an ususual name for a change to possibly make IDs easier.
This is a recent discovery and I continue to search for more information. So far this is the farthest back I've been able to trace any Irish ancestors. I live in hope.
If anyone has suggestions for other places to look and how to confirm connections I would be thrilled and grateful. It would be amazing to connect with living relatives of this family. I have been lucky enough to find my exact Byrne family in Co Wicklow and it has been confirmed with DNA testing. We remain in frequent contact.
If my plans work out I will spend a few months next Winter (2017) in Ireland, haunting libraries, archives, family history centres and anyplace else I can find or that anyone recommends.
With fingers crossed that something sounds familiar to another reader,
Ann Burns
