POUNDS FAMILY IN ABBEYLIEX 1840s

Abbeyleix (Laois)

Hello from Adelaide,  Australia

I am a descendant of James POUNDS and Mary Anne, nee PARKE. Mary Pounds is noted as a tenant of Tullyroe townland near Abbeyleix in Griffifths valuation, and I am keen to try to trace a death for James POUNDS between 1841 and 1850.

The information I have thus far is that James POUNDS came from Kilkenny and was probably born between 1780 and 1790. He appears in the Tithe Applotment books in Brownstown, Kilkenny in 1825, and was possibly involved in the linen weaving industry. Mary Anne PARKE was born in 1893 in the parish of Drumcliff in Sligo, daughter of Thomas PARKE, and married William ROBINSON in 1812, then subsequently, as relict of William ROBINSON, married James POUNDS of Brownstown, Kilkenny at St John’s Sligo in 1834. There is no mention on the transcript or newspaper report of his marital status but it is possible he was a widower.

Mary Anne and James first daughter was stillborn in 1835. At this time their address was given as Brownstown, Co. Kilkenny. Elizabeth POUNDS and her younger sister Marion Lucinda (my 2x great grandmother) POUNDS were baptised at St Canice, Kilkenny, in 1839 and1841 respectively, in each case when they were about 2 years old. James POUNDS address was given as Greensbridge, Kilkenny, his occupation as Gentleman Farmer, and the mother’s name as Mary Anne. Mary Anne would have been 46 when Marion was born. Marion’s place of birth on her Australian death certificate was listed Queens, Ireland, but this information would have been provided by the informant of the death & could easily be incorrect.

Finally, Mary Anne POUNDS, widow, married Isaac MCCARTHY, widower, on 15 September,1851. Isaac was a Baptist minister who died in Bristol, England in 1859. Mary Anne, now widowed 3 times, died in Dublin in 1872, aged 79, and was buried with permission but as a non-member at Temple Hill Quaker graveyard in Dublin.

I have found corroborating documentation for all the above, but have been unable to find any further information regarding James POUNDS. I have not found a burial at Abbeyleix (parish records viewed at the RCB in 2019) or in Kilkenny. I have not seen the Griffiths field books, or correction books, but am wondering if anyone is able to point me in the direction of any possible sources, either digital or physical?

 Many thanks

LW:

The only information I could find was a death record June 26 1841 for an Anne Pounds. Anne was 76. The church was St. Canice's Church of Ireland and she was from Greens Bridge. The record indicates she was buried in the parish of Mallardstown which is southwest of Kilkenny town. This record was found on the subscription site Roots Ireland. No record was shown for James.
