Deegan family

LaoisAbbeyleix (Laois)

My grandmother, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hayes is listed on the 1911 census as being a boarder in the house of John and Kate Deegan of Cappakeel, Emo, Queens County. At the time she was 10 years old. I don't know anything about her parents or possible siblings but don't think she was related to the Deegan family. Maybe there are still some members of the family still living in the area who could provide some information. I would be very grateful for any help or suggestions as to where to look next as I have come to a dead end. Many thanks

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

www.irishgenealogy.ie  has the images of civil records from 1864-1915. I searched for Elizabeth or Lizzie Hayes birth records in Co. Laois. The only record was the one below in 1902. No father was shown on this record. You have to sign-in to see the record. The record you want is the next to last on the page. She was born in the Abbeyleix workhouse.

I forgot to mention that the Deegans lived in Coolbanagher civil parish in northeast Co. Laois a long way from Abbeyleix. You don't need to post in that parish. I just wanted to make you aware of the parish for the Deegans.

Hi Roger

Thank you for the link to the irish geneology website. It was very useful. I found my grandmother's birth in the Abbeyleix workhouse but am curious as to how she ended up with the Deegan family in Cappakeel when she was only 10 years old. I now know her mother's name was Mary Hayes but that's about it. I have been trying to find Abbeyleix workhouse records without success. Do you know if such records exist?

Many thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
