Butlers of Ballybeigh

Sally,

I have Phelans and Whelans in my family.  Phelan and Whelan are the same name--I've found records for the same family using these two names. In the Irish language, Phelan and Whelan translate into O'Faolain.

Thank you Patricia - it is good to know how interchangeable those names are!  One less obstacle to linking my family to the Butlers in Ballybeigh!  :-)

Eileen - I hadn't seen the Tax Assessment before.  Thank you for the lead!  Much appreciated :-)

Church Baptisms to John Butler (plus variants) & Catherine Phelan
Action    Source    Surname    First Name    Year    County
Butler    Thomas    1814    Co. Tipperary
Butler    Bridget    1820    Co. Kilkenny
Butler    Laurence    1822    Co. Kilkenny
Butler    Martin    1825    Co. Kilkenny
Butler    Patrick    1829    Co. Kilkenny
Butler    Michael    1831    Co. Kilkenny
Butler    Catherine    1834    Co. Kilkenny
Butler    Mary    1838    Co. Kilkenny

Note the first child is born in Ballingarry, Tipperary.

There are lots of BUTLERS in this part of Kilkenny but this family is the only one that comes up in a search with these parents' s names.

With the exception of the first child baptised in Commons, Ballingarry (just over the county border) the rest are born in Ballybeagh.

There is a John PHELAN in Ballybeagh in 1849 (Griffith's Valuation), possibly related to Catherine. And there are 5 different BUTLER households in various townlands in the civil parish of Tullaroan and 2 other PHELANs that would be worth researching further. Use the names of the sponsors on the children's baptisms as further clues as there are a few more BUTLERs appearing there.

Dale Fogarty

i have my wifes tree on Ancestry Butler / Phelan Tullaroan

Thank you so much Dale for your comprehensive reply!  Apologies for the delay in acknowledgement.  Occasionally i am not notified of updates to my posts on here and I forget to keep checking.  Thanks so much for the info - much confirms what I had already searched out.  I am indeed currently researching the other Phelan and Butler families in the area to see if I can find some connections there.  It's slow work though - records are patchy at best for the time period.

Also thanks for reaching out John - I will try and message you if I can work out how to!

Thanks!!

Sally

Hi @johnfheaden - John I can't figure out how to message you on this platform.  What is your Ancestry user ID - and is your wife's tree public?  If so I'll look it up!  Otherwise - I'd love to make contact.  Email me at sskeam@outlook.com.au :-)

Thank you!
