Michael McGrath from Co. Kilkenny and Catherine Brennan from Clough, Co Kilkenny
I know that my great great grandmother Catherine Brennan (1837-1881) was the daughter of John Brennan and Ellen/Eleanor Walsh from Crutt/Clough. She emigrated to Canada in 1847. In 1854, in Bytown (now Ottawa), Canada, Catherine married Michael McGrath (1822-1901). Michael's parents - according to the marriage record - were William McGrath and Mary Maher.
I have a littleinformation about the Brennans and Walshes although more is always welcome. All I know of Michael is that he was born circa 1822 somewhere in Kilkenny. Searches on rootsireland.ie,ancestry.com, findmypast.com, familysearch.org, Kilkenny mailing lists, searches of parish records in the Castlecomer parish area, have all turned up nothing. Tithe applotments and Griffiths valuation have not provided sufficient information to make a connection. Searches of Irish newspapers have not been helpful. The family were likely tenant farmers or possibly worked in a quarry as Michael did in Canada.
I hired a researcher in Dublin. He found there was a William McGrath in the Clough area in the 1840s but I can find nothing to connect him with Michael, nor with a wife. The researcherdid find some emigration records that are quite possibly of Catherine's family but Brennan is such a common surname in that area I'm not certain that it is the right family. I don't know their nickname.
Michael's parents cannot be found in Canada, nor can any siblings. Catherine's father John died in 1847 but I don't know if it was in Ireland, during the ocean journey, at Grosse Ile, or in Ottawa where they settled. His widow Ellen/Helen/Eleanor remarried the next year in Bytown (Ottawa) to a man named John Doyle, also widowed. I have not been able to find them after the Canadian 1851 census. Nor can I find Catherine's brothers James and William or sister Margaret. They were all baptised in Clough and the parents were married there. I have not found any burial records for Catherine's family members.
If anyone knows of other sources I might consult I will happily do so.
Thank you and happy searching to all those seeking their Irish roots.
