Trip to Kilkenny

Castlecomer (Kilkenny)

Hi, I will be traveling to Ireland for a short trip, arriving Aug 16 and leaving Aug 20. My nephew and I will be staying in Kilkenny city (16-18th).  Planning on traveling up to Clogh to visit St Patrick's church and graveyard. I have a connection with a Paddy Purcell, who lives by the church and he supposedly has a transcription of all the graves.  Eleanor Foley, James Foley and Catherine Foley Kelly all lived near each other AND St Patrick's church in 1849, during Griffith's Valuation.  All three baptized children at the same parish between 1812 and 1830, via NLI parish registers.  I believe, Eleanor's husband (John Foley) was most likely a sibling or first cousin to James and Catherine.

While in Kilkenny city, I'd like to explore the possibility that John Foley (see attachment) was estranged from Eleanor and lived there in 1833 and also had a shop there AND possibly died there.  Any suggestions on where I might look for that information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I found some directory entries for Kilkenny city which might help with a timeline :

1824 - Thomas Foley, linen draper , High Street (Pigot's)

  "  "   - John Foley, linen & woollen draper, High Street (Pigot's)

1839 - John Foley, haberdasher, linen & woollen draper, High Street (Shearman's Directory of Waterford, Kilkenny &c)

1846 - [no sign of any Foley linen/woollen draper &c] (Slater's)

Note the Tholsel is/was on High Street

Dave, thank you, I plan on visiting the library.  BTW, my mother's maiden name was Boyland. I believe I found her father's father baptism in Athboy.  His gravestone said he was native of Royal Tara, county Meath.  The last name was Boylan in Athboy.  I will be traveling there after Kilkenny.

Shane, those records are great.  Thank you!  Where did you find that directory?

Eileen, I should have been more specific when I mentioned Paddy Purcell.  I've been in contact with a Tony Purcell from Edinburgh, Scotland, who has ancestors buried at St Patrick's in Clogh.  He has a relative named Paddy Purcell that currently lives near St. Patrick's church in Clogh.  I plan on visiting him when I go there.  That record might actually be a relative of Tony's.  Thank you.

Hi Pat,

Thank you for your reply.

My Boylan ancestors are from County Cavan, which borders County Meath to the north.

I'm not sure if you know that the Boylan surname in Irish is spelled "Ó Baoighealláin," and pronounced "O bwee-huh-lon."

From what I gather the name means "advantageous pledger," though what was pledged and who it was pledged to, is not clear.

Coincidentally, I have Foley ancestors from a little place called Lisseyclearig, which is just outside of Kenmare, County Kerry.

Have a great trip to Ireland and I hope you find the information you are looking for.

All the Best,

Dave

I have a mix of actual and digitized directories and access to several online - FindMyPast have a good collection including that '1839 Shearman's Directory of Waterford, Kilkenny', their collection also includes Pigot's 1824 and Slater's 1846.

A number of these directories are available free online - e.g. Pigot's 1824 on failteromhat.com (John Hayes), see this page for mention of the Linen related trades in Kilkenny city.

You can preview a copy of that Shearman's directory on the online shop of the Irish Family History Centre (Emigration Museum Dublin) - see this link (search for Foley entries - the first few results are for Waterford city..)
