Help at National Library of Ireland

Castlecomer (Kilkenny)

Hi, this is a big ask.  I found some information recently, that I didn't have when I went to Ireland in August.  If anyone on this site spends time at the NLI, regularly, I was hoping someone could check on some records for me.

I have specific call numbers that can be viewed while there.

I believe my 2x grandfather lived on the Wandesforde estate in the 1840's.  I believe he emigrated in 1841.  The estate essentially financed over 3000 tenants to emigrate, over about a dozen years, 1841-1854.  If I am correct, there were only about 150 that emigrated in 1841, so it shouldn't take but a few minutes to see if his name is on the list.

I have contacted the library and the cost to copy is outrageous.  If his name is on the list, I will hire a genealogist to go there and make copies.  I just don't want to spend the money, only to find his name isn't on the list.

I will provide the call numbers and his name if someone can help me.  I really don't want someone to make a special trip there.  Just hoping someone is a regular visitor.

Thank you.

Hi Patrick, What was your ancestor's name? Did you check the Tithe Applotments to see if he was resident on the estate, though a bit earlier than 1840s?

Hi Patricia,

His name is Edward Foley. An Edward Foley was 19 on the ship Republic in 1841.  Ed was 28 in the 1850 census in Pennsylvania, so the age fits.  My hope is a 19-year-old wouldn't have been able to pay for the trip on his own, thus taking advantage of the opportunity.

To answer your question about the Tithe Applotments, I believe his father is listed.  The parish register in Castlecomer is missing baptism records from 1818-28.  Unfortunately, that is when he was born.  I have lots of research pointing to this family in Clogh, and this bit of information could be very significant if he is on the list.

Thank you for replying.

Pat
