Fox family, Kilrathmurry, Kilrainy

KildareKilrainy (Kildare)

Friends,

I don't see much yet in the sources I have, but my Fox family is from Kilrathmurry. My great grandmother Annie Fox was born there in 1869. Her father was Patrick Fox. She and her father and brothers came to America in the 1880s. Annie lived until just shy of 100. I do see that Fox was one of the more common names in Kilrainy in the 19th C. I see no Foxes left in either of the extant censuses. I have not looked for church records. Does anyone have tips for me?

Hi Simon

I had a look on www.rootsireland.ie/ for the birth/baptism of Ann Fox with father Patrick 1869 + - 10 years in Kildare but had no luck.

I then checked ancestry in case someone may have her in their tree but there were no Anns; however there was a Mary with father Patrick born 1869 in Kildare from Kilcullen so i wondered if this could be your line as well?

Did your line come to Petersburg, Menard, Illinois? There was a half sister, Julia, born there in 1881.

If this is your line and you don't have access to ancestry I can email the tree owners Paul Sandison & Ron Healy - Ann Walsh for you . If it isn't yours I'm afraid rootsireland doesn't have records for Kilrainy or Kilmurry nor does the Nat Lib of Ire R C registers. You could try NI Direct &/or Family Search.

possible birth for 'your' Anne - 25th February 1869 Kilrathmurry townland, parents  Patrick Fox and Catherine Carberry[?]. Registration district is Edenderry which although based in Co. Offaly (King's Co.) also covered parts of counties Kildare &  Meath.

Col and shanew147,

Thank you so much!  The latter is my great grandmother, as her mother's maiden name was Carberry, now that you mention it.  Annie came to New York, and was "in service" with the Fleischmann family, who owned a large dairy operation.  She became the chief female servant eventually, in charge of a whole staff.  Thank you both.  Kilrathmurry is so far northwest in Kildare that I am not surprised that the area was administratively associated with Offaly.  Do you have any recommendations on what I could look for next?

I managed to locate a number of siblings for Anne, the locations are all in the same general area in County Kildare and Meath. Patrick's occupation of Herd/Labourer is probably the reason they moved around, as he would have to follow whatever employment was available to him.

Catherine 26th Oct 1864 - residence Clonard
Ellen 1st June 1867 - residence Clonard
Anne - 25th February 1869 - residence Kilrathmurry
Patrick Fox  - 20th [?] May 1873 - residence. Clonard
(all the above are registered in Edenderry civil registration district)
Catherine Fox - 12th May 1871 -  res. Clondalebeg
(Trim civil registration dist, Infield/Enfield sub-district)

Residence on Catherine's birth is shown as Clondalebeg, which is probably a reference to the townland of 'Clondalee Beg', which and is in Co. Meath and located not far from Clonard.

See Google Map - Edenderry - Kilrathmurry - Clonard - Clondalee Beg

The first (1864) Catherine, probably died young, and the parents used the name again. Given the date of birth of the first child located in civil records it's possible that Patrick and Catherine may have married before the start of civil records in 1864.

I'll check later on for possible baptisms to see if there might be any earlier children...

Thank you so much!  We have a photograph of Annie with two significantly older brothers, so it is likely that there are siblings before civil registration, yes.  I assume that "his mark" means that Mr Fox was not literate.  Correct me if I am wrong.  They certainly did move around, which stands to reason.  Thanks again.  I try to search, but I am not expert in the databases yet.

I found a few baptisms for the family - spread across three neighbouring parishes and parts of three counties :

(name  / date of baptism / parish)
Mchl. (Michael) Fox 25th Dec 1859     Balyna (left page - last entry for 1859)
Mary  Fox  8th Jun 1862     Kinnegad  (last entry - left page)
Catherine Foxe 1st Nov 1864  Kinnegad (3rd entry - right page)
Ellen Fox  26th May 1867     Kinnegad  (left page about half way down)
Anne  Fox  7th Mar 1869    Balyna    (entry 147)
Catharine Fox 14th May 1871  Killine  (top of the right hand page)

All the links are to Catholic register images on the free National Library of Ireland website.

Balyna/Ballina Catholic parish is also known as Johnstown and is located in North Co. KIldare near Enfield.
Killine/Killyon parish is to the north of Balyna/Ballina and sometimes referred to as Longwood and Killyon, and is in South West Co. Meath, and the parish of Kinnegad is to the west of this, and based in the town of the same name in Co. Westmeath. One of the three chapels for Kinnegad parish was located in Clonard. Kinnegad RC parish covered parts of counties Meath & Westmeath, Balyna was based in Kildare but right on the border with Co. Meath, and Longwood was based in Co. Meath but in a section of the county close to both Co. Kildare and Co. Westmeath.

I didn't find any good matches for a marriage of Patrick and Catherine - they may have married in a parish where records do not go back far enough, or were recorded on a page of a register that's, now faded or damaged..
