Seeking Information on O'Shea/Sullivan Ancestors in Ardea, Tuosist

Tuosist (Kerry)

Hi all,

I’m writing in the hopes of learning more about my ancestors, John O'Shea (1819–1876) and Margaret Sullivan (c. 1820–1898), who lived in Ardea, Tuosist, County Kerry. I’ve reached a bit of a brick wall when it comes to learning more about John and Margaret’s parents, possible siblings, or extended family in the Tuosist/Ardea area. I would be incredibly grateful for any guidance, records, or connections to local family lines or parish records that might help move my research forward.

Some info I have on them: John O'Shea was born on 24 June 1819 and died on 2 September 1876 in Ardea. His death was attributed to colic, and it was noted that he had received no medical care; his son John O’Shea was present at the time. Margaret Sullivan, his wife, was born around 1820 and passed away on 1 October 1898, also in Ardea. Their daughter, Margaret O'Shea (1844–1924), was my 2nd great-grandmother. She married Philip O'Brien on 28 February 1865 in Tuosist and later lived in Lauragh, Kenmare, where she passed away in 1924.

I will be visiting County Kerry this September, and I’m hoping to spend time in Ardea and the surrounding area to better understand where my family came from. If there are any local contacts, archives, or resources you would recommend, I’d love to hear about them.

Thank you!

Ellie,

The parish marriage records for the RC parish of Tuoist are late...1879, so you won't find one for this couple. Baptism records begin in 1844. On the paid site, Roots Ireland, I found two more children for John and Margaret:

Patrick Shea, 17 Mar 1846, Ardea, RC parish Tuoist, parents - John Shea & Margaret Sullivan, sponsors - Mortimer Shea & Ellen Sullivan.

Mary Shea, 9 Apr 1848, Area, RC parish Tuoist, parents - John Shea & Margaret Sullivan, sponsors - Patrick Shea & Honora Sullivan.

I did not find John or Margaret Shea on either Roots Ireland or irishgenealogy.ie, so I think that they were probably born prior to 1844.

Regards,

Carolyn

Ellie,

On some trees on Ancestry they include additional siblings, Honora and Daniel. There are no records to support. There are 13 trees on Ancestry but with no additional info from what you shared above. If you are coming to Kerry in September, you might want to fill out the Ireland Reaching Out Meet and Greet form found on this website. https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

Ellie,

First, regarding the Honora that Mary referred to, Roots Ireland shows an Honora Shea with the exact same parent's names as your Shea family, but they are from the town land of Shinnagh. This family also had a son Patrick who was born in Feb 1846, so this is a different family than yours.

Griffith's Valuation records for Ardea show four Shea (Peter, Patrick, John and Margaret) names and MANY Sullivan names as tenants...you might check those out. I'd say that both John and Margaret are from Ardea.

I think that the birth date information you show for both John and Margaret are just guesses as there are not birth records that early from Tuoist.

Regards,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn and Mary,

Thank you both so much for your thoughtful and informative replies—I really appreciate the time you took to look into these records and share your insights.

Carolyn, your finds on Roots Ireland are incredibly helpful. I hadn’t come across Patrick (1846) or Mary (1848) yet, so that’s a valuable addition to the family tree. I agree—it seems likely that John and Margaret were born before the parish records began in 1844 (and I got birthdates from the wrong couple originally), which helps explain the difficulty in tracing their origins. I’ll definitely spend more time with Griffith’s Valuation to see if I can connect the other Sheas and Sullivans in Ardea.

Mary, thank you as well for the clarification on Honora and the suggestion to use Ireland Reaching Out’s Meet and Greet form. That sounds like an interesting opportunity, and I’ll be sure to submit a request ahead of my September visit. I’m really looking forward to visiting Tuosist and Ardea in person, and your help has definitely given me a clearer direction for the trip, and I’m truly grateful.

Thanks again!
